Spaceship Away...
« on: 08 July, 2004, 03:47:47 PM »
I've just added Spaceship Away to the fanzine page. I know it's not a 2000AD fanzine, but these new adventures of Dan Dare need all the exposure they can get, and it's easier for me to put the profiles here than on my Spacefleet site.

If you have read the magazines, please vote on the contents.

Cheers,

Wake

Actually, it's not his site. He does, however, make the rules.

And he just happens to be right.

Let me remind you all that Dan Dare appeared in 2000AD.

Or did you erase that from your memories?

I like the 2000AD version of Dan Dare as well as the original. I started getting the new Eagle but stopped fairly quickly because I found I was only reading it for the Dan Dare strip.

The thrust of Spaceship Away is to revive the 1950s style stories, so it hasn't yet had any articles on the 2000AD, new Eagle or CGI versions of Dan Dare.

If there was no link to 2000AD then I wouldn't have put it here, but as there is a tenuous link it's just a case of whether I'm willing to put the time in, which for Spaceship Away I am.

Cheers,

Wake

P.S. This original artwork (by Don Harley) is for sale priced at ?700, as is the cutaway of the Marco Polo

Oompa Loompa it's a very good read,
But extra readers it surely does need.

There are new Titan books of the original stories too,
Read them just like the Oompa Loompas dumpity do.

I dispute the assertion that Oompa Loompas read Dan Dare.

I think they'd prefer the Bunty.

I was thinking of getting these as a pressie for my dad. He got all the originals when he was a nipper, and as yet doesn't know about these. Can anyone comment on how they measure up?

Personally, I'd love to see Pat Mills' run on 80's Eagle Dan Dare reprinted. I was genuinely excited reading each episode - and yes Pat, it didn't pass me by that there was a missing episode.

Having picked up a couple cheap recently (#1 and #3, leaving me without #2)I think they aren't bad, the Phoenix mission is drawn very faithfully.

They are a touch expensive I think, ?7 each or 3 for ?20 (festival prices), and you don't get a lot of strip for that, though they do seem to get better as they go on, with more strips, features and articles in there.

Of the three issues, the main story has three 2-page episodes in each issue.  The Phoenix Mission doesn't finish in these three.  So a bit of a cliff hanger.

If they'd made it into more of a magazine with strips earlier, and not printed on the amazing art paper, they could probably have sold more and then eventually a collected edition on better paper.  But they are doing it for the love of it, rather than trying to fleece people (I suspect it was an expensive project).

Not a bad present to get someone who is interested in Dan Dare though!

Check the details at the bottom of the flyer page on the Spaceship Away section of Spacefleet which I just hastily put together.

I loved the Pat Mills run too, very large story arc, which linked back to the second episode when young Dare and Sugar Robinson returned to earth...where was the missing episode??

Cant wait for them to get part 4 in at Nostalgia or Andromeda -there is a kind of a link from issue 4 - they are reprinting Dan Dire, which originally ran in Comics Media News (I think) back in 77/78.  It was basically a spoof strip poking fun at how Dan Dare was being bastardised in 2000AD at the time by the evil IPC management types eager to exploit the name
