A cricketing question
« on: 16 September, 2002, 10:56:02 PM »
For the first time in my very Scottish life, I played cricket yesterday.

There was an interesting and possibly 2K-related moment, as a group of lads started shouting "Uncle!" at the umpire.

Now it could be I'm reading too much into this, but were they calling him Uncle Ump?

Perhaps some English boarder could tell me if this is a common occurence, or perhaps it was a cricketing term adopted by the Dredd strip?

Or am I suffering from Thrill Power overload, as well as a sore bowling arm.

BTW, I was crap at yoour English game, but at one point the clever weakness of my bowling fluked an "out!"

Straight to the middle stump!

A quick internet seach came up with this:

Uncle's funeral

The office boy had taken the afternoon off to go to his uncle's funeral. The boss, thinking that the boy might not have been entirely truthful, went along to the cricket ground to check him out. Sure enough, there he was.

'So this is your uncle's funeral?' he said.

'It looks like it,' said the boy, 'he's the umpire!'
