Overall: Something missing, can't put my finger on it.

More murderage in Shakara and strips that actually entertain in place of Ampney exCruciatingly boring and Necrophim.

For me anyway  ;)

Slaine.

Soth, no!

At the risk of sounding even shallower than usual, it was probably action.  Even those strips where something physical and violent did happen (Dredd, Shakara, Necrophim) it was almost as an aside on the way to something else, that didn't happen in this Prog.  Too many journeys, not enough arrivals.

Reckon it would have only taken one thrill to tip this into "OMFG this is good" mode. A Defoe or Savage would have done that for me! As it was, I was still pretty happy with the prog this week but I dooooo see what you mean about the journeys point. :)

Interesting start to the new Dredd story arc. Shakara still top notch in the utterly bonkers category.

Again a week behind... Never mind. Another top Prog.

Cover:
Nothing to write home about but it's Richardson so there's a lot to like.

Dredd: Absolutly brilliant, somne of the best Higgins art in a long time. Masterful depiction of Mega-City One. Story-wise fast paced yet dense, plenty of action and black comedy, not to mention all of the references to early Dredd, superb.

Shakara: More awesome art, more action, more laughs. Great.

Ampney Crucis: Credit for some clever dailogue, story is only plodding along though. Not bad.

Necrophim: Not as painful as usual, some awesome character designs by Carter.

Kingdom: Brillaint touch with the flash back scene, and the story is really getting intresting and indepth, yet told in such a simple and fun manner as always. Great.

Overall: 90% awesome. Top Thrill: Dredd.

Cheers,
Lee

Dredd opens with a big splash page. Deller could be the name of a water cooler, it's Al Ewing on script, Higgins on art, but I don't like the colours, no siree bob. As the story unfolds, I think its leading to one thing. It happened after Papillon and after the Alcatraz 3; closure of a prison that has become a mere monument of its former self. And I think this would be a fitting end.

The cover, which is based on the opening break, is a great eye catcher. On further viewing it's "story" dries a little. So it is best to keep reminding yourself of it in short bursts. That way, best satisfied.'Cause it is worked on/out well.

Yeah, Droid Life has got me thinking about BMB's girls and wondering if it's a compliment or a slur.

Shakara does a jack-knife and goes into the beginnings, I'll presume of a very malicious phase for Shakara. Henry's art is a dream as it cuts a figure of the moronically self-deluded captain out of the comic.

Ampney was not good company on the train (on which I read the prog this week,) "demanding filly dolls and, other friends of mine," I mean; it needs more time. It's hearty British nonsense that I want to believe is not going round in circles.  His connection with the fat ginger tom, for example, is unfolding out to something.

And for me Necrophim is very like Ampney in every respect but on a whole different level.

All three of these pacers[Ampney, Necrophim and Shakara] are damn fine strips. Really, really good writing and art. They fair better than a lot of drivel that is out there. They have only two problems. They're up against two extraordinary strips- Dredd and Kingdom.

Kingdom is outstanding and my go to strip after Dredd. The three interlocking storylines are so well put together by Abnett and Elson. You've got to read it to believe it. More name-dropping too, extracting earlier set pieces into new mixes.

Talking of name-dropping, I'm particularly fond of El Sombre and look forward to getting my hands on the new book.

Nice star scan and no doubt an honour for Liam, that the crew of 2000ad chose to push it in the prog.

Talking of the crew! It looks like Pye01 is really getting the shreds in damage report. Hehehe as he goes for the Homer Simpson, 30 day trial by soft drinks. Hang in the Pye, if Homer can, anyone can!

Meg 307 next , then.(With returning character, ooooh.) :)

Really pleased with this prog, looking forward to tommorrow
:D
Dredd: A nice opening for what looks to be a promising story, great art.
Shakara: Getting into full swing, the art is nothing short of outstanding, and some fluid writing.
Ampney Crucis: The weakest of the lineup came up trumps this week, my favourite in the prog.
Necrophim: Finally seems to be getting off the ground, awesome.
Kingdom: Also awesome, loved the flashback scenes.
Great Prog, 9/10

Just got my copy of Prog 1718 (shut up, sometimes they take a very long time to get to the U.S. West Coast), opened it to the first page of Dredd ("When the fuel truck hit the roadway, Deller was already moving"), and cracked up. Compare: http://www.miskatonic.org/parker-first-lines.html

Well done, Mr. Ewing.
