Meltdown Man reviewed over at my site
« on: 02 February, 2011, 11:04:40 AM »

The Nerve Center is on a roll lately, isn't it, guys?  The latest 2000 AD book to make it to my desk is Meltdown Man and it's terrific, even better than I remembered it.  This is definitely a book everybody needs to pick up!  Click the image to pop over to my site and read about it.

Good review!

Agree about the cover, I have to say. It just does NOT convey the wonder of much of the art inside.

Still, so glad this was reprinted. A very enjoyable adventure with gorgeous art. Well done Rebellion on reprinting!  :D

Yep, this jumped off the 2000AD stall at Kapow, into my bag.

I've traced it through my back progs a few times, but it really works as a GN. It was a great idea to bring it together.

Loved it.

A magic story from a magic time for 2000AD. Shame the cover looks like it's set in  quarry  ;)

Its a work of genius from the point of view of tbhe art and the script.

Others may not agree with this assessment but thats simply because they are wrong.

Shame about the cover which doesnt truly represent the strip in terms of the artwork.

Sounds suspiciously like shoplifting, creep. Five years!

Meltdown Man was a great series - but for a crack SAS man it took him long enough to figure out that blindingly obvious map!

Agree about the cover, it's probably the worst piece of Gibbons art I've seen and I'm a big fan of his. So much lush Massimo art they could have used instead to sell the contents of the book further.

I dearly, dearly love Meltdown Man, and that's a great review that sums up all its plus points (and faults) pretty well. But I have to take issue with this bit:

I think I'd quibble about the cover, which is a recolored take on an old Dave Gibbons pin-up from the period. While I'd agree that there were no better images from the period to sell this book, there's a stodgy, macho, po-faced feel to that image that totally belies how weird and exciting the story actually is.

Ahem -

There's also this lovely but rather mad piece Massimo did for Robbie in his last few years -

Out of 221 pages surely it would not have been much of a problem finding a panel that represents the strip for the cover ?

That would have involved a little more thought rather than simply choosing a pin up.Also there is something not quite right about Nick Stones right leg if you study it closely.

The final episode is unsatisfactory as well or more like ludicrous as presumably everyone who was clearly within the blast radius of the cruise missile was vaporised but thats going by the perspective in the panels. There are many different ways of looking at this but in any event the ending felt completely rushed because of editorial constraints but it really should have been given another instalment or two to end itself in a more plausable way.

Well... there's the one I just posted, Pete. At least it's by Belardinelli.

Robbie's piece really is the perfect cover for Meltdown man - it clearly says: 'here be a beautiful oddity like nothing else you've seen'.

I'll stand by it.  I did say "While I'd agree that there were no better images from the period to sell this book..." and that star scan came, what, eleven or twelve years later.

Fair dos. This I didn't know, not being a Squaxx at the time. In fact I hadn't even been born when the original strip ran!
