Enjoyable prog all round. the cover alone was worth it. Shakara still top thrill for me, Kingdom a close second.

Cover:I'm big on stylized art, so whislt the lineart on the horse is great, it is a bit lacking in the colour and composition department. I can see him delivering some better covers when he has something more intresting to draw.

Dredd: Solid again, everything a great Dredd needs is there. The last dialogue from Judge Giant confused me a little, he's only trying to sound like Dredd right, it wasn't a mistake on Ewings part right? Brill Higgins art again.

Shakara: More action , more big set pieces, more bonkers aliens what's not to like!

Ampney Crucis:I didn't really buy into Cromwell's death so I kinda saw this coming. Not bad, like seeing Fraser make his art syle work for the action scenes. The guy is very very talented, I often forget that.

Necrophim: groan...

Kingdom: With these flash backs this has become a whole new kind of animal, and I'm really digging it. Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Overall: Necrophim the only weak link as-per. Top Thrill for me.. .Dredd? Shakara? Kingdom? I'll go with Shakara I think.

Cheers,
Lee

Good prog when I finally got it, again the density of the strips at the moment makes for a very satisfying read.  I'm afraid I haven't read the whole thread yet, but some thoughts before I do...

Never thought I'd say this, but my top thrill this week was Necrophim.  For my money Tony needs to straighten out some of his dialogue - Lucifer says:  "The whoresons have ranged weapons!" and  Tordelback hears:  "That's 3d6 damage at Medium range and my top hat is only AC9!".  And then there's "What celestial sign from the heavens are you waiting for?", which I'm not sure I can successfully parse when said by a Succubus to a Necrophim at the Gates of Hell.

But..

This was a great episode, the art was a major career high for Lee Carter, thanks in no small part to a brilliant set-up, and the whole thing was genuinely exciting.  Some of the imagery was worthy of Kevin O'Neill, Cerberus in particular looming over the battlefield was one of the best single panels in the prog for yonks.  Cythea's betrayal wasn't just 'another bloody twist', it was part of the plan from as far back as the end of Book 2, and crystalised 90% of the plotlines in one moment, shifting all the uncertainty onto Uriel's shoulders - what is he going to do?  Support a revitalised Lucifer, or overthrow him?  It's been a long and sometimes frustrating build-up, but I think the payoff more than justifies it.  Well done Tony and Lee, this is the easily the best 2000AD work either have produced.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, even the Necrophim cover was aces.  Congrats to Steve Ellis too!

"What celestial sign from the heavens are you waiting for?"

Oh, a truism. Well spotted. I can't claim I was paying attention. 'Ranged weapons' stood out like a sore thumb though. I half expected it to be followed up with reference to 'ballistic skill' and 'area effect weapons.'
STRIKE !!!

Quick note on the timeline of Kingdom - when Symons wakes up in the first book, he tries to contact other outposts and says-

"Okay, this is Symons at Eight. Atomic clock says it's June Fifteenth, 3965 Anno Frigging Domini. Can you believe THAT? Where does the time go, eh?"

Then he reminices about life when he was in high school -

"Still, no wonder we laughed. No bloody wonder. It was the Nineteen-Eighties. We had everything. Mork & Mindy, VHS, Depeche Mode, Live Aid, Kings of the world we were."

Yeah, but how many months has it been since we met Symons?  How many months?

Doesn't prove anything -- it's always the 1980s in Australia.

Cheers!

Good catch Exilewood.  The 40th Century!  They obviously build skyscrapers of stern stuff in Auxtralia.  Vegemite and Tim Tams, probably.

I think we have to assume, that Symons, being in 'High School' in the '80s & in his late thirties (?) when woken, is of (mostly  ;)) our generation. Which would mean...that the coming of 'THEM' is about...erm...a day or two away, no? Watch the skies Earthlets!

Apologies for necropost but catching up with my progs via digitaldownload means I'm a bit behind.

Agree nearly entirely with what everyone has said above when they have lavished praise on something.

Except Necrophim.  Which, for my mind, isn't even as good as those Lynx "Even Angels will fall" adverts.

I can see why it should be good and those in praise of it make valid points but it just hasn't grabbed me.  Purely a taste thing, I can't abide strawberries or cats either.
Be excellent to each other. And party on!
