New to the forum and 2000AD
« on: 23 April, 2011, 04:28:22 PM »
I'm new here and (if truth be told) new to 2000 AD. I've been living in London and reading U.S comics every week for the last 12 years and I'm a big trade paperback reader too. I read 3 of the Button Man vols last year and really enjoyed them. Kapow Comicon tipped me over the edge with a huge and friendly 2000AD showing there. I picked up my first prog last week and I'm now sold. Judge Dredd Case Files vol 1 is halfway read right now and I'm eager to subscribe to the series. So bring on your recomendations and whatnot as I have 30+ years of awesomeness to catch up on. :)

Hi templar, and welcome.
Right, take all your money, look at it, wave it a fond farewell and get along to either forbidden planet or waterstones, charing cross road, before they close. Both are usually fully stocked up with 2000AD trades. Buy a mostly random selection, but make sure you pick up dredd: tour of duty, slaine: the horned god or books of invasions 1, strontium dog 1, savage: taking liberties, sinister dexter (any), nikolai dante vol 1 (and all the other dantes if you can afford it). Take them home, pour a glass of your favourite tipple, and get stuck in. You'll never want to leave tharg's clammy grip.

Welcome to the mad world of thrillpower. You might find these two threads useful, in which we discussed Dredd recommendations for newcomers / converts.

On a non-Dredd front, The Complete Bad Company collection has just been released... I am biased, because it's my favourite strip ever, but that would certainly be well worth a look.

Welcome, you might as well have your own thread, so I split this off.

Greg's links are exactly what you need, designed for just such request so dig in there and don't be shy about asking specific questions if anything crops up.

I'm also happy to hear the 2000AD presence at Kapow helped convert you to the ways of Thrillpower - I'm sure it makes all the droids feel it is worth the effort.
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

Welcome you have come to the right place for advise regarding everything 2000ad and more!

The community is brilliant and as SmallBlueThing has said "You'll never want to leave tharg's clammy grip".
Wind your neck in Dude, there are polite ways of debating and starting a sentence with "Hello?" ain't one. Nobody likes a smart arse.

Hey Templar - always good to see new readers!

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions. In the meantime, I would suggest catching up on the trades of Kingdom, Shakara, Caballistics Inc, Bad Company, Nemesis the Warlock, Strontium Dog among others. As for standalone series, the likes of Leviathan, Atavar and the Frazer Irving Storming Heaven/From Grace Collection are well worth a look.

But most importantly, get some of the Dredd trades! The Case Files are superb, but I'd also recommend you grab some of the more recent colour collections such as The Art of Kenny Who?, America, Total War and Mandroid - truly amazing stuff.

Welcome aboard - great to see a 2000AD presence at the shows is having an effect.

Like people have said, there are plenty of trades to choose from - there is pretty much an unbroken run of 15 years worth of Dredd in the Case Files and the best of the more recent Dredds.

Have fun!

Welcome aboard. There's a whole world of goodness out there for you to have fun with.

As well as trades if space allows why not have a nosey at eBay there's normally any number sales of large chunks of old 2000ads going for very decent prices. A good way to fine out a lot about the variety of stories that are about.

What ever you do have fun.

These posts have been amazingly helpful - Mr. Postman brought me CF 14, Dead Man and The Horned God yesterday and I want MORE. It's hard to choose but I think I'll go for CF5 from what I've read here. On reading Necropolis, though, I feel I'd like to know more about Dredd's doubts and the Judda but from reading this link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Judge-Dredd-Case-Files/lm/ROIRFQQEUDPI/ref=cm_srch_res_rpli_alt_1 it seems like that would involve reading CF8-13, which I can't afford at the moment. Any ideas about selectivity?

What sense is there in Amazon's random cycle of customer reviews for any old Case File when you click on specific issues? Imagine if they did that on some long running series of novels like Discworld. A newcomer wouldn't have a clue.
I kinda like the fat....uh...the fat...uhm, you know, like an arm holding a baby's apple kind of wurst.
