Prog 1740: Thrills From Another Planet!
« on: 25 June, 2011, 10:04:47 AM »
Amazing stuff!

Cracking episode of Dredd, and an entertaining start from both Zombo and Tharg's 3rillers.

Is it just me or is there something different about both Macniel and Flint's artwork - both seem to have shaken up their style a little.

Oh, I should add - arsom cover by Liam Sharp, too.

Come to think of it, we've seen this style from Macniel before, in that America follow up story from Meg 300. Can't really put my finger on what's different about it - just more interesting layouts and angles perhaps. Overall it feels a bit chunkier too.

Under a lovely Liam Sharp cover hides what for me at least is a little underwhelming jump on Prog, I'd agree with Radiator that the Dredd and Zombo are great starts and the 3riller is at least interesting concept but I can't find much love for Sinister Dexter it's just seemed to stumble towards some kind of conclusion for years now and while Savage looks really nice it fails to hold any interest. Over recent months we I've been spoiled by the debut of Absalom and it's something of that quality that for me is missing here. I had just kind of hoped the big summer offensive would pack more punch.

Of course it's Saturday morning and I've a late shift today and tomorrow ahead of me so I might just be being a complete misery.

no, would agree wholeheartedly.  Pleasantly surprised at how much I found myself enjoying Absalom in the end after the initial 'this looks like an idea from Ennis' Hellblazer run' moment.  Fingers crossed SinDex / Savage will pick up.

Tend to agree with JamesCor, this is rather flat for a relaunch Prog. By far my favourite thing about it is John McCrea's art on the story whose name I can't remember. It might just be the different colouring but it's much nicer and smoother than his recent outings on The Boys.

All the elements are fine and I'm sure I'll end up enjoying the story, but I still can't help wishing we'd seen the last of PJ Maybe.

Can't remember the last outing very clearly, but Flint's art is decidedly different to the first series of Zombo. I'd say it's another deliberate change: look at the way Henry always mixed things up in each new series of Shakara.

I was looking forward to PJ's return as his tales are always entertaining and cunning. This started a bit slow and it beggars belief that the Judges use other prisoners to dish out meals and allow inmates to send out letters in what is supposedly a high security facility but I'm still on board. Would be nice to see a bit of 'Endgame' here, though.

No, I noticed it too. Especially on his depiction of PJ.

I didn't feel underwhelmed by this issue - there are generally one or two things in the average prog that I don't like and this was no exception (haven't followed Sinister Dexter or Savage in years). But there's usually enough stuff I do like to make it all worthwhile - frankly I'd happily pay the £2.25 for this week's Dredd alone. Add to that Zombo - which is on my 2000ad thrills 'B' list, and 3rillers, which was enjoyable = 3 hits out of five is not bad - all in all that makes a good prog for me! I suppose I'm mainly excited about the coming weeks, where we'll be getting not only the new Dredd epic proper, plus new series of Indigo Prime and Lowlife...

ISTR that The Gingerbread Man was the first time he adopted a scratchier, leaner drawing style. This latest series of Zombo seems to take things even further in that direction - spidery inks and heavier areas of black. I like it!

Looking at Colin's work again, I'd say he is either drawing at a different size or using a thicker brush/pen which overall gives things a warmer, chunkier feel. There seems to be more variation in camera angles and more close ups. It feels more dynamic and busier. Again, I like!

You lot are spoiled!

Wagner and MacNeil on PJ Maybe's return to Dredd? That's worth the cover price alone!

I enjoyed the whole prog, with Savage another highlight. Thrill-power all round.

I loved it also, with the possible exception of the 3riller. I liked it, but it didn't stand up to the rest of the prog. Maybe the next installment with sway me. Top cover by Mr Sharp. Such lovely, vibrant colour use!  :D

Only last night I read last weeks Prog and said how hard it can be to pull of ending and yet last week it was achieved with aplomb. Well this week we have a lesson in how to make the also tricky opening episodes likewise sparkle. So often they can feel like set up, a steady start to set the scene. This Prog proves how that can be done with so much more beside. That said I'm getting ahead of myself.

I really should start at the beginning and that cover is just wonderful. We're what half way through the year and we're already having another dazzling year for covers. Could we have another Tharg cover winning the end of year cover vote? That Liam Sharp bit of delight will surely be a contender.

Inside the excellence of the openings is summed up by the final panels of Sinister Dexter, Savage and Zombo. All three absolutely crackle with thrill-power and have me hankering for more already. I loved how all three set up, getting there with masterly introductions. Setting the scene but each telling a contained powerful story in there own rights. Sinister Dexter and Zombo do so my introducing a nice intriguing new element or two. Savage just takes a superb snap shoot of the character we already know so well. All three are top draw and fantastically drawn.

The 3riller wasn't quite as controlled meandering a bit but was effective enough to make me want to see more.

The Dredd however actually surpassed the masterful three. Cramming in three times as many introductions as the other brilliant tales in this issue. It was a very healthy reminder of quite how much Wagner is able to effortlessly blend into 6 pages. Christ the number of American writers who should be made to sit down and read this again and again until they've worked out how its done, or how its half done to give them a chance. Its just an incredible piece of craft so beautifully realised.  While the first three stories I talked about did a fantastic job my isolating elements to present an introduction, set up and story Wagner opened to scene wide and gave us it all.

Oh man and that cover too. Endings last week, beginning this week. 2000ad really is a masterclass!

Great Prog.

Just read Dredd so far - three times.  PJ Maybe is probably the greatest comic book bad guy ever, and the quality really does show when Wagner returns to Dredd.  This is wonderful stuff.

However:  Can a face change machine really make your hair grow (and be styled) as well as give you a shave?

Maybe I'll read the Dredd again then move on to the rest of the prog...

It can if Mr Wagner says it can. ;)

BTW  Thanks for the tentative thumbs up on the art.  :D I guess my style has been shifting slowly for a while. The next couple of episodes is where it really starts to change. I don't think it's quite there yet, but getting very close indeed. I'm developing what I've learned on these Dredds for "Strange and Darke" for the Meg. I'm really excited about it, hopefully you all will too when it comes out.

Anyhoo, no more talk of the Meg. This is the Prog thread!

Discuss!

A bug thumbs up for the whole prog. My Thrill receptors are in melt down.
The only down side is that I still cant see the future chief judge Vzzbux anywhere.
