Prog 1743: Chaos Reigns
« on: 16 July, 2011, 08:23:27 AM »
Fabulous prog!

Dredd:

Sets up the coming months nicely. Wagner gifts us a heady mix of a rather Orlok-esque femme fatale, Dredd's concerns about the future, incompetent authority and mad cits.

Best line: "So we're agreed. Fiscal demands require a tax on the unborn."

3riller

Oooh. Scary. Liked this much better than the last. Worley gives us a neat little horror, with a disturbing talking head in a bag.

Best line: "Daddy where's yous shadow gone?

Savage

Mmm. Weakest in the prog for me; good but not stand out. And I'm a bit confused about the tiger. Hasn't this been used before?

Best line: "What difference does that make? They're trained to hunt humans!"

Sin Dex

A lot of fun if a bit talky-heady. If you're going to do lots of exposition, this is how you do it.

Best line: "That is the mandate he gave me." "And how did the 'man-date, go? Think you'll see him again?"

Zombo

Ah, Zombo. What drugs were consumed in the making of this? The best summary I can give is Zombie on Zombie banter and violence. Filled with catchy lines and corpses.

Best line: "I'm just curious, do you like eggs?"  "Eggs of... vengance?"

Special nod for Ben Willsher for the art on this weeks' Dredd. I don't know how many of the cameos were from the script direction or off his own back but they're great to see.

Surely that's Max Normal in the first panel and that cadet that sent his mother down for 18 years at the bottom of page 3. That block name on the last page is pretty familiar too.

The panel with the busts of the former Chief Judges is brilliant. Guess which one's in shadow.

And the snork woman is...disturbing.

So, the Day of Chaos is upon us and my initial reaction is a great big shrug. Nothing wrong with this first episode, but nothing to get the pulse racing yet. I'm happy to wait for my mind to be blown at a later date.

Wordy Worley wades wonce more into the world of the weird and witchy in the new Tharg's Norwichristmas story. I liked the "life flashing before your eyes" flashback idea and I liked it even more when it turned out it might be his life flashing before something else's eyes. Or vice versa.

Zombo was funny again and so was the punchy man from Sin/Dex, which was my favourite thing in the Prog for the second week in a row.
This fool got more comic books than a motherfucker!

Yeah, that's Judge Brisco. Nice touch!

Dredd was a great opener, as we might expect from Wagner, and I loved the rest of the prog. Maybe I should stop posting in these threads, because I feel like I say the same thing every week. :D

Zombo made me laugh out loud, Savage is gripping and SinDex is so good these days that - despite having disliked it for so long - I felt moved to Tweet Dabnett about it, complimenting him.

The new 3riller story was creepy as hell. Creepy. As. Hell.

I love my weekly prog.

I know what you mean... not about you, that'd be very rude but I sat down to type away wondering why anybody would be interested in my whittering opinion about the Prog being bloody great again... but then I decided I love the sound of my own typing so what the heck.

The Dredd was some excellent building but little more. Some great detail and brilliantly crafted just it had the feel of a train slowly building up steam. Very enjoyable, very intriguing but nothing to really get ya teeth into yet. Oh it'll come and read back after this is all done I suspect this will be a brill episode just now its all potential.

The rest was just superb. The 3riller worked an absolute treat, hooked me in something rotten and loved the art. Have we seen Michael Dowling before or is he a new droid, doesn't ring any bells to me but loved his stuff.  Savage was just great. Okay I'm getting a bit (tiny tiny bit) tired of the 'Ha got ya' 'Oh no actually ha ha we got you' ' Well actually no ha ha ha we actually have got YOU' but that's part of the genre and really I'm just looking for things to say other than bloody loved it and am looking forward to whats in the "Zone of Alienation" is it alien-ation or alien-nation?

Zombo was hilarious stuff my worries about the balance between funny n creepy it was great. Oh how do you like them eggs?

Finally the best again was Sinister Dexter. If we are going to have talking heads let them always be Dan Abnett talking heads and dialogue and punchable faces. Like Savage this one also set up more and more intrigue. Man long may this one run bloody love it.

Great Prog.

Dredd: I enjoyed the Apathy party opener. It's the sort of party I would join if I could be bothered.

3rillers: intriguing, looking forward to more.

Savage: didn't flow well for me, it seemed a little disjointed and awkward. Can't fault the art though which I'm in awe of.

Sindex: getting into this now. Last page made me sit up and take notice so it's moved up a gear.

Zombo looks good. I'm saving that for a quiet few minutes tomorrow...

Zombo is starting to worry me. This is too good a series to end. Lets hope his current situation is just a blip.

A question to you all
"Do you like eggs?"

"Do you like eggs?"

Eggs of... thrill power?

What was the black smudge in the Apathy Party's logo? Was it just that they couldn't be bothered to paint the 'A' properly?

Savage didn't do anything for me but I loved every page of the rest. Sinister Dexter is picking up steam after too long floundering in sub-plots but it's not as funny as Zombo which had me sniggering on the bus. There's a gaping hole where his brain should be! Somehow I don't think that really matters to Zombo.

The art droids are firing on all cylinders (do droids have cylinders?) and I'm glad I wasn't the only one to spot that woman's citizen snorks.

I liked the busts of the old chief judges, but it doesn't make any sense that Cal would be one of them -- an insane mass murderer who murdered his predecessor and slaughtered millions.

(I'm just nitpicking. It was an awesome start.)

Dredd: I think we've had quite a few pointers to this in a number of stories recently so the slow build up in this prog isn't a negative. i imagine that Cal's bust would have been removed and an empty plinth  left.

3rillers: Good enough hoping for a big twist

Savage: The tiger feels just silly, but hopefully this will be pulled out of the fire in time

Sindex: Try as I might i can't get any interest in this...

Zombo  simply the bears buns!

Overall a bit of a rope bridge prog.
I will name him Tharg, and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him.

You can clearly see him fourth from right, he's the one with the wide grin.

Evil or not he was still chief judge and had the insight to built the wall to keep the mutant scum out ( I know it was to keep the citizens in initially, fucking pedants).

Hah!

Citizen Norks!   :D

Anyway, how good was that Prog?  Very.  Top Thrill must be Zombo but I enjoyed the Prog from start to finish, and the 3hriller opener was really good.

Nice work, Green Bonce.

Enjoyed the prog this week.

Dredd still seems a bit powerless and left behind by Justice Department. I think that's intentional though and it will end up with him saving the day.
Surely Cal wouldn't have a bust as he was never legitimately Chief Judge. He got to the position illeagally so he was a fraudulent chief judge. Same with Sinfield.

Sin/Dex is a fun story although I'm not always sure what's going on. I like the puns.

I really enjoyed Savage - I can't see what turns people off this strip - I think it's great fun.

The 3riller was great but I thought the final line 'Daddy where's your shadow' just over-egged it a little bit.

Similarly, I'm enjoying Zombo but I think the wackyness is just a little overdone.
