Question about The ABC warriors in Savage and there future
« on: 15 August, 2011, 12:52:21 PM »
***There could be spoilers from here on out, just to warn latecomers***

I noticed when the Blackblood robots turned up this week in Savage that they were though to be mindless robots (a point proven when there signal was shut off). One of the resistance fighters mentions how the Volgons had been experimenting with putting human brains in robots so that got me thinking about the A.B.C Warriors.

Are the robots with A.I brains or are those guys robots with human brains inside them? If so have we ever seen the seven in there human form?

(Sorry if this is common knowlegde, I'm not exatly new to 2000AD but this one had me stumped over the weekend)

Good question.

The ABC Warriors have been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Hammerstein, for sure, fought in Vlogan wars (circa 2001?) and then joined Ro-Busters, then joined the ABC Warriors in their original Mars storyline (late 21st century?) then turned up hundreds of years later in Nemesis Book Four, before the Blackhole ABC Warrriors storyline and later stories.

So, my guess is that the robots in Savage pre-date the Hammerstein and Blackblood that are in the ABC Warriors. As such, I'd say that they have robot AI brains BASED on human brains. Otherwise, you'd think the brains would have died a long time ago.

I cannot believe I thought this through and posted this.

AFAIK this is the first time the human-brain-in-robot-body thing has been mentioned, and only applies to the Blackbloods. I presume that General Blackblood of the ABC warriors was a later model with design similarities but a fully cybernetic brain.

And I think  the good doctor is quite a few years early with Hammerstein - the current Savage, with the mark 1 hammersteins is set several years after Invason in 1999 (sometime between 2006-2009 I think). Hammerstein himself was the third generation of this war-droid; and went into service around the same time Mega City One was being built, so I'd guess around early to mid-century.

The 'human brain' Blackbloods idea is a great one on Pat's part.  It ties together many strings from Savage, Ro-Busters and ABC Warriors.  Howard Quartz, who is a Bill Gates/Richard Branson/Donald Trump(?) amalgam in his Savage incarnation, will famously go on to be a brain in a robot body as Mr. 10% in Ro-Busters, so the technology cannot be far off (at least before he dies of old age).  Hammerstein himself, as a Mark III, is also the first robot to be built with emotions (according to the gorgeous SMS-drawn flashback episode in the Black Hole story), intended as a solution to the friend-or-foe problems with the Mark I's and II's.

This suggests that true artificial intelligence is still pretty basic when (prior to?) Old Red Eyes is being constructed sometime in the middish 21st century, but that organic-brain-to-machine interface technology is better understood, at least from 2010 on.

As long as our Blackblood doesn't turn out to still have an organic brain (which would invalidate his whole Church of Judas schtick), I'll be very pleased with this turn of events.

I always took it that Blackblood did have a human brain in some form or other. Or at least parts there of.

My evidence:

Of course having looked at it again now I'm beginning to doubt that's meant to be organic?

Holy, and indeed, crap - you're right!  I never saw that as a human brain but it definitely could be.  'Course this does raise the question of how his backup body in The Shadow Warriors worked, but given how daft that idea was in the first place (Blackblood's had the peg leg and one eye, as I recall), it's not much of a stretch...

Hammerstein is reprogrammed for the second Volgan War at some point after 2042, perhaps no earlier than the 2050. Recruited by Colonel Lash, Hammerstein's first tour on Mars happens prior to 2071 as, by then, he's serving under General Blood 'n' Nuts during the Battle of Armageddon. By 2078, he's been sold off as army surplus to Howard Quartz and becomes part of the Ro-Busters team. Fast-forward to the Far Future, cue Nemesis.

Of course, Pat's now ignoring his own continuity, so . . .

Right, i just asked mr mills, and he says: the blackbloods in savage, the mark ones, had organic brains- but later models, including general blackblood, are all robotic.

Nonsense, Savage is obviously Deadlock/Nemesis.

...and does only one of the 'Blackbloods' in the Savage story make the SSSSSSS! sound?
