Deus Ex - Human Revolution
« on: 16 August, 2011, 07:25:47 PM »
I've given in to the hype and pre-ordered this game on XBox 360 - very unusual for me - I normally only buy games under £20.

I have been looking forward to this ever since seeing the amazing trailer. I've never played a Deus Ex game before although I've heard good things. I like the idea of the 4 game pillars allowing you free choice in every situation which effects the overall outcome of the game. From the youtube vids it looks a bit like a cross between a James Bond game and Mass Effect.

Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

Is anyone else planning on getting this? Has anyone played Deus Ex before? You may be able to give me a better idea of what to expect.

Only played the first one wayyyy back.

I hated it when I first started playing it since it required you to upgrade, and the weapons felt really crap compared to what I was used to.

By the end I loved it. It had a nice feeling of a more sandbox world before GTA came along - I remember throwing the body of an assassin from an apartment Bruce Willis-style and watching the passers-by freaking out when the body hit the ground.

I'm debating whether or not to buy the Special Edition or the Augumented Edition. What do you think Hivemind?

The trailer to this has me sold.  Big fan of the first one and didn't mind the second but this looks spectacular.  Me and a firend spent a massive amount of time throwing corpses down stairs, off balconies, hiding them in funny places, the best one was thrown off a 3rd story balcony straight into a dumpster the lid crashing down a couple of seconds after the body thumped into it. (guess you had to be there)

Loved (and still love) the first one, but hated the sequel so much that it killed my enthusiasm for the series. Can't manage to get remotely excited about this new one - if it gets amazing reviews across the board I'll check it out at some point though.

Yeah, I was the same. It feels really clunky - almost unplayable - at first, but by the end you've transformed your character into a sleek killing machine. I loved the scope of it, and the enviroments which gave you a lot of freedom to genuinely explore. Definitely one of my favourite ever games. The plot was a massive rip-off of Neuromancer, though - they pretty much lifted whole story elements wholesale!

I have this on pre-order and I'm really looking forward to it.

I am a huge fan of the first one, I must have played it through at least three times but I hated the second malformed turd of a game, I probably only managed to put up with a couple of hours of it before I quit.

I must admit to being a little apprehensive about getting it at first after the mess they made of the sequel, but everything I hear about this game shows that the devs are really keen to avoid the mistakes of the last game. I've read quite a few opinions from people who played the leaked beta and it's been overwhelmingly positive so far so I'm pretty confident that it's going to be good.

By the way, if anyone wants a good pre-order price check out coolshop, their website might look a bit like a five year old designed it but I am reliably informed that they are on the level.

As with others I was worried about this after the disappointment of Invisible War and was quite happily going to give it a miss after reading early previews.  Plus there's an expensive few months for gaming on the horizon and I needed to save money somewhere.

Then I played the leak and immediately added it to my pre-order list.  Personally I think it's great, really has the feel of the original that was missing from Invisible War.
A couple of minor niggles: There's no melee weapons/combat other than the little cut scene takedowns and the xp system is heavily weighted towards stealthy play.  There's bonuses for sneaking around being non-lethal but there doesn't seem to be anything for making loud noises and leaving a pile of smouldering corpses in your wake.  Which is a bit disappointing seeing how going in guns blazing still requires some skill because you will get very dead very quickly just standing in the open trying to shoot things.  Then again that could be balanced out in the proper release, only 8 and a bit days left to find out.

I like the idea of stealth games - i'm just not very good at them (i think I'm a bit impatient). I personally don't mind going in for a stealthy approach just as long as I have a fighting chance of survival if I'm discovered.

Yep, I too have very little tolerance for stealth-based games. I just don't have the patience for them and playing in that way is not my idea of fun at all.

I quite like stealth games. There's a lot of sniping in games like FARCRY2 if you want to play it that way and I enjoy blowing the head of some pixellated bad guy, moving to cover then doing excactly the same to his fellow thugs.

That'll teach 'em to re spawn!

This does look like a good game but I'll wait to the reviews are out. My machine is a bit old now so I'll look at the specs and see.

I should clarify - I like 'pick your enemies off one by one' type stealth games (like Tenchu/Hitman etc), but I find 'sneak past without anyone seeing/if you get spotted = instant fail' type stealth games entirely tedious.
