Ello board
« on: 19 August, 2011, 12:55:20 AM »
Alright guys, just saying hello.

I'm an old school 2000ad reader (hope that aint frowned upon??), I have a ton of Progs, Annuals and specials in the loft from around '85-'89 I think?? when i was a subscriber. I dug out the annuals recently and had a read again, they are in immaculate condition!! Also bought a couple of the Dredd Case Files and looking to get some more of the same thing but I'll check the forum for suggestions for getting back into it all but ABC Warriors is a must!

How does 2000ad compare nowadays? Been thinkin of giving it a go again.

Welcome. After a rather dodgy period in the 90's, 2000ad was taken over by Rebellion and has gone from strength to strength. They've released loads of old and more recent thrills in collecetd volumes, and the new stuff like Zombo, Shakara, and Kingdon are fanatstic, not to mention developments in Dredd's world.

If the search function on this newly revamped board was up and running. I'd direct you to a couple of threads recommending some of the best books to catch up on - but I'm sure someone cleverer than me will be able to do that!

and "frowned upon"? It''s almost compulsory!

My advice would be start reading again at prog 1750 (which is out in a couple of weeks time) - it's a jumping on issue - and features the start of the next arc in the latest Judge Dredd epic 'Day of Chaos', the return of popular recent series 'Lowlife' (the chronicles of a deranged undercover Judge called Dirty Frank), Ampney Crucis Investigates... (a sort of Edwardian supernatural sleuth) and the return of cult classic series Indigo Prime after an absence of twenty years or so!

I second the recommendations for Kingdom, Zombo and Shakara - and I'd add Nikolai Dante to that list, just make sure to start with book 1.

Yeah the Prog is on absolutely wonderful form. As Radiator says 1750 will be a good jumping on point with a very exciting line up. When these things come up I always like to recommend having a look on eBay as you can often get bundles of runs of back progs pretty cheap with are a good taster. Its been on fine form for a long time but I'd say its entered a new golden age since Prog 1632 (man that's a statement I should ave put more thought into!). But to be honest anything this century and you won't be going much wrong.

More importantly welcome aboard and have fun.

Yeah, i'd second everything said above. Returning old readers are, along with newbies, especially welcome here.

The prog has been excellent since the Rebellion takeover, and under the editorship of Tharg's current meat puppet has been consistently high quality. I understand from others that a weekly can be offputting, so if you havent that particular inclination due to space, outlay or whatever, i'd urge you to read some of the trades. Rebellion's policy regarding the collected trade editions has been very successful, and there's a hell of a lot to choose from, old and new.

Welcome to what can be, more often than not, the friendliest place on the web.

Cheers guys. I will watch out for that Prog in next couple weeks then!

Yeah, that was what I meant with the 'frown upon' meaning I'm popping up after years!  :-[
Thanks for the welcome and suggestions! I didn't want to mention I couldn't find the search option fro looking like a noob.

 :)

When you say the trades, do you mean these?

Trades (or TPBs -  Trade PaperBacks) = collections of previously published strips, whereas Graphic Novels should mean one-off stories intended to be published as one book, (but often just means *sounds cooler than 'comics'")

Hi there. I'm an old time reader recently returned to the fold too. People here seem mostly harmless  :) I've just recently subscribed to the prog and its awesome. As others have said 1750 will be the right time to jump onboard.
