Prog 1748 : Weapons Hot!
« on: 20 August, 2011, 10:54:49 AM »
Up early to grab my Prog off the mat today as a Heroclix yesterday heralded that it'd be a good one.

And it is - on the letters front at least. OK Sin/Dex cover with an awkward looking Finnigan leg and everyone else present and correct. I will retire to the bog and comment further later.

Ace prog! I love the crazy legs cover!

Dredd - The Willsher droid was obviously feeling a bit frisky when providing the art for this, looking at some of those establishment names, very funny indeed! Not to mention those lady parts on the third page! As usual, his art is supremely cool with exceptional story telling skills.

The script is very dense and it's cool seeing a Block Inspection going on. As many of us know, Ben has stated that the next part of this story has something MASSIVE in it, so the end of this episode gives me goosebumps! I'm actually fearing for Dredd!

3-Christmas-in-Norwich-o-tron - A good ending to a solid tale. I particularly liked the metallurgy lesson, very clever. Steve's colours in this are mental! They shouldn't work but they just, do! Schoolboy error at the bottom of page 3 though, one bit of green grass in that fence. Hmmm, I wonder if Red Seas would get so much stick if it was coloured?

Savage - Really, really cool. Didn't put a foot wrong for me. Mills writes great bad guys and as usual, Goddard's art is flawless.

Sinister Dexter - A rip roaring, all action episode with great art and suitably wonderful Dabnett dialogue. I read it in about two minutes but what a great two minutes! Good cliffhanger but I reckon Dex is gonna save the day...

Zombo - Crackers! Planetronix were hilarious! "I form a mechanical lion due to budgetary constraints!" was just plain silly! Exciting end and the 'Next Prog' box made me laugh.

Letters - 5 great letters and one sub par. Very much enjoyed the aptly named Will Cox's effort!

Cheers Pete - don't be too hard on Justin Powles of Essex it's only his second effort following a Prog 1696 debut.

The 3riller was a curious thing. To me it felt like it could be a prologue to Maniac 5, and again, I reckon this could have been compressed into a tight little FS. So far the only one of these that has worked for me is Alec Worleys.

That being said- I'd love to have more please Tharg!

It's a fine cover but the legs worry me. I don't get them.

Loving Dredd. 3rillers had a good ending but after the dark colouring of Dredd I needed sunglasses to read it :)  Not as good as the previous 3rillers but better than the first. As always Zombo tops.

Haven't Prog reviewed for a few weeks what with my internet at home for some bizarre reason boycotting the site. That means by the time I got into work Monday reviewing the Prog seemed a distant memory. I had noticed that not too many reviews had been going up and wondered why.

Well this weeks landed only yesterday and I'm fresh for a review and kinda think I know why not too many reviews are appearing, or at least I have a theory. If nothing else the Prog has been consistent, so very very consistent of late. I feel as though I could copy any of my reviews from the last 9 weeks, crop and change a little and paste it up for the current prog.

Now this isn't a bad thing at all, well except for the number of reviews on here I suspect as its been consistently good. Not great, I think one Prog in the last 8 has been great, but good. The '3rillers' have been an interesting and worthwhile experiment I hope to see return. 'Zombo' has been fun but I kinda wish at times it'd be a little more creepy like the first story, but always entertaining. 'Dredd' has been steady, well crafted but hasn't grabbed the way Wagner normally does. 'Savage' and 'Sinister Dexter' have been incredible fun and typically the best of the bunch. There have been slight variations, odd stories in odd weeks have broken the mold but typically that's a fair summary.

The thing is these days weeks of "Good" is almost disappointing. I forget how many times over the last couple of years I've called a Prog 'Great' and wondered if I should find a new adjective (is it) to raise the stakes. Mind next week should be an interesting one with four conclusions I'm looking forward to seeing how everything wraps up and how the very different strips currently in there manage their endings.

Good (x9) Prog

Dredd: Well good so far.... Dirty Judge or Sov Judge??

3rillers: That was not bad.... bit weak if I am honest?

Savage: it's okay, but let see what happens next.

Sins&Dex: Okish....

Zombo: Love it!! Planetronix! I Form - The Rest! Aww I miss General Beast's rants!
No! Please! Not that! Not-- THE SCORPIONS!

I'd better say something after humfing about that of postings/reviews eh?

Dredd: I know some are finding this a bit slow, but not me I'm old enough and ugly enough to enjoy it for what it is, the build up to a climax: wonderful! 'The pursuit you see and never the arrest' as Tom Waits would have it. Artwork very good with fine story telling too. As for that second Judge he's with em, not a jimp or bend cop but part of their org, which makes me think Senfield's lot maybe involved

3rillers: Just never really got this, it could have been done in a five pager, what was the twist/shock? did I miss something? the flat colour reminded me of the dark days of the Progs early 1990's colouring forays, not a good thing.

Savage: I'm enjoying this in a LOEG/Where's Wally sort of way, but sometimes wish it had more show and less tell

Sins&Dex: I have tried, but don't get this at all, never have. I've never found Gunsharks great heroes/anti-heroes, morally repugnant with an ability to reguv like something from Dante and a multiverse like something from DC comics it just turns me off, however I did like the puns early on in the first couple of series.

Zombo: The madness continues, wonderful out there stuff, zigzagging in ways that make it hard to guess what will come next ,this is classic stuff. Lets hope Mr E-Wing know when to kill the fatted calf and not milk it, flogg it and outwise bugger it up.

Overall this prog's a bit of a  so-so sandwich, the filling of Sindex and Savage failing to tickle the old taste buds while the bread of Dredd and Zombo give us all the sustenance we need until Bobo arrives with next week's pic-a-nic basket
I will name him Tharg, and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him.

Lovely cover by T.T. The more I look at it, the more I like it.

Enjoyed all the thrills this week. Dredd, Savage and Zombo are all so good, I really couldn't choose between them. The 3riller and Sin/Dex were very enjoyabel, too, though, yes I too was a little confused over the ending of the 3 parter. It felt almost like an audition for a fuller series.

Ace prog! I love the crazy legs cover!

Couldn't agree more. Excellent cover!

I read the last 8 progs or so over three days and have been happy with the build up, particularly now we're getting to the Big Moment. Roll on next prog!  :)
