The Return Of The Sherman Kid
« on: 20 September, 2011, 10:01:59 AM »
Would love to see a follow up to my namesake. This was ,for me, an iconic story which produced a great cover when Dredd cancelled New Year (Prog 146) .A masterclass in compact story telling and with an excellent  ending -I always thought there would be a follow up.My patience finally ended about 15 years later -when I wrote a follow up myself (turned into a 18 episode epic  and posted it in to the Nerve Centre).Didn't receive a reply -my fault really because rather than a synopsis I posted it in it's entirerity -oops.
So Mr John Wagner ,how about it, I would love to see a follow up to the perhaps under-appreciated Classic.

What would be the point when we have the PJ Maybe stories?

Well PJ Maybe is just citizen for starters. Sherman was enrolled as a cadet at the Academy of Law, so that puts a completely different slant on things as he presumably got the full eagle , became a judge and enforced the law. What kind of judge would have been an interesting question on it's own -a Tek Judge, Street Judge or someone who directed black ops -who knows, but plenty to explore there.
Secondly PJ is a psychopathic/sociopathic serial killer/mass murderer -as opposed to Sherman who never killed anyone. His genius had a very very different dynamic and thus would take a very different direction so, again, lots of potential I think.Plus there is a huge backstory to fill in there ,what did he accomplish -did he invent for example the Stub Gun, the possibilities are huge.
So yes, reviving this character would be very interesting  and very cool

Don't really see it myself. Why would that make a good story?

I always regard the story in question as very firmly in Dredd's endearingly goofy early period, when the strip was still finding it's feet. I refer to Pj Maybe because imo thats a much better example of a story revolving around a delinquent genius.

The above is not the story, just the backdrop, the storytelling I would happily let John Wagner handle. The point is that he is an interesting character and would come at things from a different angle to others.
PJ Maybe is a fantastic character but  I think Dredd sometimes lacks having sufficient Judge characters, ones that aren't killed off after five minutes. This has changed in recent years happily with Koburn, Beeny, Logan ,Rothman but a couple more wouldn't go a miss imo.

That's some coincidence that you post about a sequel to a 30 year old, single issue, story and within 3 months it becomes a reality! What's the chances of that happening then?

Are you the Nerve Centre postman or indeed are you Tharg on the pimp?
