Prog 1753 - Wanted
« on: 24 September, 2011, 08:00:08 AM »
COVER

PJ Maybe, by Paul Marshall and Abigail Ryder. Not familiar with them. It's an old fashioned Wanted poster. A bit too sequia for me but it'd stand out in WH Smiths.

DREDD

As the cover suggests, Dredd looks for Maybe. A nice procedural (by Wagner, folks). Cracking opening lines about Logan's arm.

AMPNEY

oooh. A Sun (newspaper) from the future. I wonder how this ties into the Ednington-verse now? Art seems much better this week, too.

INDIGO PRIME

Ends. WTF?

Still, only a two prog break.

Jury's out but with the bad guy reveal I will perservere a few more episodes

ANGEL ZERO

Old school story. Old school art.

Old school rocks, I have decided. Lovely spaceship design.

LOW LIFE

Still the best thing in the prog. More of the same. Which is good.

In Copenhagen next week, so someone else can blag this thread for a week.

Another good prog. Dredd this week is amzing. Nice cliff-hanger, too. So happy to see Henry Flint back on art duties. The rest of the prog is cracking, with only Ampney C dropping the thrill voltage slightly. The last line of Low Life had me chuckling this week as well. Brilliant writing. :D

All great stuff, despite the persistent - and very annoying - use of the word "phenomena" as a singular.

I especially liked Dredd and Crucis but the rest has me hooked too.

A good issue, with Low Life being the highlight for me. I laughed out loud several times during that. Dredd was good too, and Indigo Prime is enjoyable but still in set-up mode. Hopefully the next arc will have more happenings.

Ampney was pretty decent, but doesn't really rock my world, and Angel Zero hasn't gripped me yet. It's quite an interesting set-up though so will see where it goes.

Okay now this is really kicking into full stride.

Firstly this weeks Dredd was fantastic. Okay as said Henry Flint is a God of Thrill-power and as with the rest of the Prog the strip is a joy to behold, looks just glorious. The story while again another fairly stand piece, how many times have we seen PJ do this kinda thing strides ahead the norm driven by two things. Firstly watching PJ do this kinda thing is a blast (concerned that since we have another new name Judge on the scene we'll get another judicial gaff which is beginning to grate but I'm looking ahead and shouldn't) and secondly that opening scene is just a delight.

Angel Zero is still building nicely. Still full of mystery but as Dr X said very old skool, particularly in its pacing and its flying along a treat. Looks glorious too.

Ampney looks glorious too too and is another solid episode building nicely and feels like its about to hit full pace.

Low Life just continues to be a delight. Fair cruising at warp speed wonderful and looking glorious too too too...

And Indigo Prime really gets going bringing to a close and highly entertaining first art and then slams to a halt. Well okay its just catching its breathe before setting off again soon but slight shame to lose the momentum its gained. A fantastic introduction to the world Mr Smith has built and nicely wraps up the story as I now understand it to be of getting Danny established as an agent. The rest has been setting the course for future stories. Really enjoyed this one and hope the quick break doesn't trip things up. In Mr Smith we trust though. Oh and it looks... well you get it by now.

Great Prog.

P.S. HOG HEAVEN - how happy am I too see the advert for 'Aquila'. First 2000ad gave me a western (of sorts) now a Roman story. Tharg with these thrills you are spoiling me.

Low Life wins the prog for me, followed by Indigo and Ampney. Am a bit perturbed to not have Dredd in the top three but that's the joy of the anthology I suppose. Another strong prog though, mind.  :D

Lowlife wins this week. Dredd was fine. Angel Zero hasn't grabbed me at all I'm afraid, and does anyone else feel slightly short-changed at only getting 4 pages of it? I'm aware of how I've contradicted myself there by the way, as in the line from Annie Hall ('the food is terrible', 'I know - and such small portions!'). Indigo Prime looks ace - especially the Kirby-esque touches in the first panel, but I'm afraid I haven't connected with this anything like I did with Cradlegrave (although I realise it's been a scene-setter). Crucis, hmm, some weeks I'm really into it, others not at all. This week was the latter.

I must having a serious sense of humour shortfall here as I've never found Dirty Frank all that funny. Nice art and great story but funny? Hmmm...

I think Indigo Prime is the perfect example of the limitations imposed by the 2000AD 4/5/6 page strip format. This short (ridiculously short - 4 episodes and a break already? WTF? That's crap.) introduction reads far better in one go than it does in four separate chunks. I've a feeling of deja vu here as waaaaay back when Killing Time was first run I'd no idea what was going on, who was being referenced nor why. Same thing is happening in this new run. I'm persevering as I like John Smith's work and I like the Indigo Prime concept.

Everything else is chuntering away just fine. No comments, move along, nothing to see here...

PS We need more Droids Life. Sometimes I think Droids Life is the best strip in the comic!

Everything the monkey says, except IP which I feel strangely disconnected from, Logan's arm stuff was a nice touch, hoped for some dreadful pun about coming not fully armed  :D

Wasn't thrilled by the cover. Otherwise I was a happy being by the time I reached the end.

Low Life is growing on me. I wasn't sure when it started but I really enjoyed this weeks.

I want to like Indigo Prime. Really I do. But I often find myself reaching the end of the weeks installment and wondering what all that was about.

Angel Zero building nicely. Loving the artwork on that too. In fact, if there's one thing that stands out week after week in the prog just now it's the quality of the art and such varied and distinctive styles too. Great stuff.

Every time I look at the cover my brain tells me it's Matt Smith as The Doctor for a few milliseconds before I focus properly.

I'm really enjoying Dredd. Thinking about everything that happened in this weeks episode, it seems impossible that it was only 5 pages long. So much excellence packed into that space with great art too.

Indigo Prime is fantastic too. I don't mind not knowing what's going on, I trust Mr. Smith to reveal all in the fullness of time and in the meantime I'll enjoy the ride. Again, stunning art.

Low Life is great. Dirty Frank cracks me up, the motion capture Kaiju wrestling is a fantastic idea and D'Israeli is a master.

Angel Zero is alright but I feel like I've got less of a grip on what's going on than I have with Indigo Prime. Again, I'll wait and see.

Ampney Crucis is definitely not my cup of Earl Grey but other people seem to like it. I'll keep reading it though, I don't understand people who don't read every story in the prog. It only takes, what, 5 minutes to read each episode (if that). I'd rather get my moneys worth by reading stuff I don't enjoy too much. It's never that bad and there's usually some redeeming quality to each story.

Another great prog!

The cover was a bit disappointing. Progs 1750-52 has three of the best covers of the year (if not longer) so it was always going to be difficult to live up to those.

Dredd was a nice, dense procedural. Wagner really seems to like being in Maybe's company.

Indigo Prime was fantastic, particularly those last two pages from Bagwell. Grant Morrison could learn a thing or two from these guys...

Angel Zero is old-school thrills and I'm liking it, though it hasn't grabbed me proper yet.

Low Life was another short, sharp shock to the senses. Loved the monster motion capture!

I'm also really liking Ampney Crucis this time around. I've always liked the concept but it never really delivered in the past. This time, however, there's a real sense of 'Anything can happen' and a healthy does of impending doom to boot. I like how it's hinting at tying into Edginton's Stickleback and Red Seas universes: I'm hoping for a Dead Eyes-style shock twist at some point! And the art from Simon Davis is wonderful.

Anyone know what's replacing Indigo Prime for the next two weeks?
