Oddities from the past, and wotnot
« on: 08 October, 2011, 04:41:13 PM »
Since Mr Large posted on that other thread about the CRISIS/ REVOLVER specials that he wasn't sure existed or not, I've been thinking we should have a thread dedicated to oddities in our collections that may be of interest to others. I know Mr Forces will inevitably get around to posting links to absolutely everything ever released with even a smidgen of relevence to 2000AD, but in the meantime here's this.

Most of the obsessive amongst us will already have these, but here are the COMIC RELIEF SPECIAL and AARGH!

The Comic Relief Special is of interest not only for the huge amount of UK (so contemporary 2000AD) talent it uses, but for a few of the pages in particular. I've put photos of them below.

The AARGH! Special was a cross-Atlantic protest mag in opposition to the then-Government's CLAUSE 28- which elder Earthlets will remember as being of some concern back in the 80s. Title stands for "Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia", and the mag features Alan Moore and a whole host of 80s comics bigknobs (Frank Miller, Dave Sim, etc) doing comics about that. Including a great page by mr Kevin O'Neill of this parish, which I've shown below.

Apologies for the quality of the pictures, but that's as good as my camera gets.

Hope this is of interest to some of you.

I bought the Comic Relief Comic, obsessive is probably the right word for why I did buy it. I don't remember it being very funny, I just got it for the artists therein. (.......and the money to charity bit of course) It's been a long time since I read it, but I seem to remember Edmond Blackadder being the strips villan. I've never seen the AARGH! Special, that O'Neill page is great, cheers for sharing SBT.

Ah my favourite type of thread!

The Comic Relief one was quite a good one for weird odds and sods.

Just some odds and sods, some much rarer than others.... ignoring my favourite foreign language versions  :(

For all those into the Dredd RPG there where loads of extra add ons published in various White Dwarf magazines.

Titan Judge Dredd GN 1 - The colour one "The Streets of Mega-City" and the 10th Anniversary One.

Some of the Titan Hardbacks are now difficult to find as well.

Of the US published comics these are some of the low run ones (I believe!)

Judge Dredd - Black Widow
Judge Dredd - Raptor
Slaine the Berserker - some of the issues had a double heading, e.g. 14/15 and 16/17 I think these where printing errors
The Hanged Man
Finn
Wireheads
Psi-Files
Psi-Judge: Engrams
The Clown - almost impossible to find due to the name!
Zenith Phase 2 - 1 to 3 very difficult to find 3 - Phase 1 1 to 3 not too bad
Flesh the Legend of Shamana - number 4, again not sure this exists or not :-(

Other rare ones:

The non Judge Dredd Poster Progs - I think the Nemesis one was the most difficult to find

Mandarin published Slaine: The Horned God the complete Story

Titan - Zenith Phase 1 (should have been pulped but a few out there)

Black Flame - Judge Dredd 9 - Psykodedden (difficult to get for some reason)

Argon the Savage / Turbo Jones - Pathfinder / Chronos Carnival - take a bit of hunting from the US

Funeral for a Friend

Best of Judge Dredd Special Edition

Judge Dredd - The Oz Odyssey - published in Aus (ok so its foreign!)

Judge Dredd It's Friends, Fans and Foes - book about the fans etc.

Dredd The Law Exhibition Program

Halo Jones the Stage Play Program

Gronk Knitting Pattern - Rob where's mine?!?!?!?!?  ;)

Models - Fink Angel and Judge Dredd by Gremlynz - not sure these where produced

Lifesize Head & Shoulders of some of the ABC Warriors - Blackblood and Joe P - I seem to remember also Mean Machine

The unlicensed 15mm Dredd range of metal figures

Virgin Games - Rogue Trooper game from 1990

Fanzines - Friends of Tharg and Class of '79

The 3 (Yellow / Red / Blue) x Judge Dredd Lead Taxi's based from the film - the guy that makes these seems to have disappeared, although his wife was very very ill when I got the last made up one from him.

Dredd & Death Candles

Juve on the Move Backpack

T-Shirts & Hoodies from the ZARJAZ Exhibition (Dec 2005) that Rufus set up. Most of the runs on the T-shirts where either 100, or 50, or 30 or 8!

The full run (18 or maybe 19?) of the 2nd BT Phone Card series from 1997 - I think both sets where limited to a 1000 units.

The set of 4 Nokia 3310 Phone covers - Dredd / Death / Durham Red / Mega-City Punk(?!?!?!)

CD of Judge Dredd The Original Adventures - Series 2 - The Apocalypse War - still can't find this! :-(

CD - The 2 disc version of the Judge Dredd Film Original Score

VHS - 10 years of 2000AD Comic Art Profile - Alan Moore in a 80's Miami Vice White & Blue stripy suit! LMFAO

Every piece of original artwork.

Looking forward to seeing what other goodies are out there!

The Titan Zenith Phase one is easier to come by than you might think. I got a copy from ebay and the same person has sold about 10 of them . Think she must have bought an old lockup with a pallet of em inside!!

They are both on tape and cd, amateurs  ;)

Remember the ASDA issue, I only bought a few and some are still sealed!

What a great idea for a thread. Got a couple of little things to add that are kinda related (I think) tomorrow but in the mean time this is the kinda thing I have in mind.

While not an actual Dredd appearance a clear tribute to the character from Walt Simonson's classic Thor run, issues 371 and 372. There is a similar thing in a couple of Excalibur issues as well but not as good as these. I love these nods of the hat to Dredd (and co) in other comics. Some one pointed out a great one for Nemesis in Green Lantern by Kev O'Neill.

Judge Dredd It's Friends, Fans and Foes - book about the fans etc

What.

The HELL.

Is This?

EDIT: Don't worry, I've found it! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Knowing-Audiences-Judge-Dredd-Friends/dp/1860205496

Bugger! That actually sounds quite interesting. I'll be having that.

EDIT2: Amazon claims 256 pages, but Google Books says 328. Mistake? Or two different versions?

I had those Thor issues, Colin, but sold them as part of a bundle of stuff some time ago. They were good fun.

If we're going to Dredd pastiche/tribute/rip-offs, look no further than Starblazer #236: Warrior of the Law. It's a pretty weak Dredd rip-off, complete with little eagles here and there, and actually drawn by Ian Gibson. His style isn't consistent throughout but there are some aliens there that are unmistakable.

It also happens to be for sale over on my blog (check my "for sale" thread in the Classifieds section of this site), as is the Funeral For A Friend poster story. Just saying. :)

Not really the same as the stuff you guys are talking about, but I spotted this when I was at a gig recently and meant to share it at the time. I was quite heartened to see somebody ripping off recent 2000AD art for their poster rather than Bolland Dredd or Nemesis.

This fool got more comic books than a motherfucker!

Those two other 'Dredd' appearances I mentioned yesterday. The first is a bit of an assumption but given that its Wagner and Kennedy and the context of the story it seems a pretty safe one. We're looking at the shadows cast over the 'mutie' here from DC's brilliant 'Outcasts'

Secondly and my favourite is completely blantant. From John Ostrander's superb 'Grimjack'

Out of interest does anybody know who 'Jake' is meant to be? I seem to recall there's another similar reference later in the series but on a quick look tonight couldn't spot it.

I can hear the creaking of the trademark  infringement lawyers coffins now, Colin YNWA. Seriously though  lovely stuff and P.J Holden's 86 er's being used for a poster!  Bring it back Tharg! Don't listen to the naysayers, flim flam, doodle burps and Republican party leadership candidates! >:(
