No, it's set in GTA's Los Angeles, so if anything it's more of a remake of San Andreas.

Looks interesting, and as was predicted, looks like it's going to be very much set in our recessionary times.

I for one am hoping this one builds on the more 'realistic' GTAIV, which I found much more satisfying to play than the PS2 games - though I know I'm in a minority there. Leave the silly costumes, fighter jets, jet packs etc for DLC, or Saints Row.

Possibly.....but they could still put in side activities that are marginally more exciting that having your fucking annoying cousin phoning you up asking if you fancy a game of darts.

Yes, definitely. I could see what they were trying to do with that, but it got annoying pretty quickly.

It's hard to put a finger on, but something about the muted colour palette, slower pace and the relative lack of cartoony elements and game-breaking vehicles in GTAIV made for a much more rounded experience - the city felt much more tangible, and when you finally did get to, for example, fly in a helicopter it felt much more special. For me, just driving round causing chaos quickly gets boring - I spent quite a while just driving and walking round Liberty City seeing the sights - it was that amazing.

Hope they make the on-foot controls a bit smoother this time though - I always find Rockstar's games very fiddly and twitchy (though I really liked the vehicle handling in IV).

Be nice to have a Forza-style rewind button too - it's always annoying when you accidentally bring down the fuzz when you're actually trying to keep within the law!

Re: the trailer - is that Ray Liotta's character from Vice City doing the v/o - or possibly the bloke from GTAIII?

And usually because the vehicle handling was so weird that taking a corner at anything more a slow crawl could easily result in mass pedestrian-killing.  Or crashing into that passing cop car.

I've often wondered why GTA-types games don't offer a 'safe-driving' mode, that when engaged locks your maximum speed, makes it easier to stay in the right lane and makes sure that pedestrians always get out of the way a la Driver/LA Noire.

Totally in agreement with Mr. Rennie re: the side activities - if you weren't on a mission on GTAIV there was pretty much nothing to do. It looked great, you could drive all over the place... but you had no reason to do anything other than missions. At least in the likes of San Andreas, you had rival gangs to deal with, and could amuse yourself by driving into their territory and taking them on - in IV, everyone was wallpaper.

Saints Row 2 has a cruise control feature that functions much like what you're talking about.

In fact, as derivative as the Saints Row games are, they've got a whole list of features that can best be described as "things in GTA that annoy you, and that we've fixed and made a lot better in our game".

I know a lot of people like the Saints Row games - prefer them to GTA even - but there's always something about them that I find deeply off-putting - probably the tone/style of them. GTA almost seems sophisticated by comparison.

As much as was achieved technically with GTA4, all I could see was where it wasn't the GTA games I had previously enjoyed, reinventing a perfectly successful franchise for its detractors rather than its fans.  Once I'd finished the story, I never bothered playing it again, and that includes the DLC.  Just couldn't be bothered with it.

Played San Andreas loads in the meantime, though.  Finished that god knows how many times now and still haven't done everything.

But...but there was loads to do in GTA IV after you completed the main story! You could go around looking for all those collectable object pigeons to kill, and....errmm....no, wait...I'll think of something else in a minute...

I mentioned the darts already, didn't I? Damn...

To be fair, some of the multiplayer modes were fun - a whole city to chase each other around in.

Re: the trailer... nice use of 'Ogden's Nut Gone Flake' by the Small Faces for the soundtrack. One thing the GTA games have frequently had is impeccable taste in music.

I think that someone should make an MMO with a similar aesthetic to Grand Theft Auto that pits teams of criminals and enforcers against each other in shootouts and junk. I am sure that such a game would be a huge success.

My ideal Dredd game would be something along the lines of the GTA series, I think a big open city with lots of side quests and arrests to make and a solid main story would be superb.

I really hope the new game is a mix of GTA4 and Vice city, if it turns out to be San Andreas 2 I will probably skip it, GTA SA was a solid enough game but I just hated the gangster setting.

Heh.

As for Saints Row's dubious taste...
