Thrillpowered Thursday returns for a new 13-week run!
« on: 10 November, 2011, 08:02:27 AM »
Because you demanded it - really, you did - my blog Thrillpowered Thursday returns this week for a new 13-part engagement, looking at the House of Tharg in the period of 2005-06.  In today's installment, Karl Richardson debuts with some engaging and wonderful artwork that doesn't get nearly enough praise.

Read me!  Then, you know, tell everybody you know about it.

Well what an interesting post to start with and one I utterly disagree with, in the best sense of having a different opinion to that expressed.

I personally done really get on with Karl Richardson's art, its not bad and I certainly know I'm in the minority but I find it a bit fussy and awkward for my tastes. Its one of those personal preferences things that however much I understand why other people like it I can't get past.

Mike Collins' work on American Gothic on the other hand I really like. The style, though different to his normal seemed perfect for this particular story. Its funny you should mention the shift in the art towards the second half of the story. When I read it I saw that as a deliberate change in tone around the time of the massacre to move to a darker more sombre fell as the strip had. I even went as far as to compare that latter part to the inking style of Klaus Janson, which coming from me is a massive complement as I'm a big fan of Mr Janson. Interesting to here such a different take of the same thing.

Great blog entry as ever.

Well, thanks, guys!  It's actually easier for me to look at the blog in terms of "chunks" on the calendar, because that helps me plan ahead, decide what strips and stories will get the spotlight, write little bits in advance depending on my mood or enthusiasm, choose what I'm going to want to scan, and so on.  It gives me the structure that I need, and then I get the reward of a little break after I finish the goal.  It was very fun writing the last thirteen this way, and so I think that I'll probably continue doing it like this.  Thirteen on, four or five off.

So, this week, a story long overdue in the telling, and one of my longest entries, giving everybody plenty of reading on their lunch hour.  It's the story of 2000 AD's "Rainbow Spine" line of reprint books, the one that promised so much with the distribution deal with DC and fumbled so badly.  But wasn't it exciting at the time?!
Check out the tragic story in this week's new Thrillpowered Thursday!  And if you haven't read the really interesting "eulogy" for that line that Comics Reporter Tom Spurgeon wrote upon its cancellation, definitely follow the link and check that out.

(While I'm here, my numbers last week were really disappointing.  Actually, they were kind of pathetic.  If you enjoy the blog, please help spread the word, link me, tweet me, retweet me, tell your Facebook friends, and, yes, click on the ads, that sort of thing.  Thanks!)

Flubbed or not, the DC/2000 AD reprints* were directly responsible for getting me into 2000 AD the series. So for that I am grateful. Also, somewhat grateful that the line crashed and burned, as an extremely strong and professional line of reprints poured out of Rebellion proper. I became a 2000 AD fan at EXACTLY the right time to ride the reprint wave. I was very lucky.

*or, to be completely honest, the Humanoid collections lead me to the 2000 AD collections, which lead me to Tooth

As I had an almost full run of progs, I never took much interest in the reprint situation, especially in the US, so I wan't aware of any of that saga, another fascinating read GG!

Yeah great post as ever Grant. We can only speculate that there might have been a long term gain all in this as the in house programme has been so good and one has to assume very successful. After all would any other programme still be mining to get to the likes of Blackhawk etc. Maybe it was all for the best.

Still good to read the detail as this all happened in my wilderness years.

Sorry Grant, I hadn't realised you were back. I should trust my intuition more - I hovered over the link in my favourites recently and thought "Nah, he's not writing that at the moment."

Stevie ordered each & every one of the volumes in the DC reprint line but Diamond in their usual munificence shipped a scant 2 titles* to the Adelaide Comics Centre

Of which, in retrospect, he’s eternally grateful.

* the Complete** Indigo Prime & that first Sinister Dexter.

** ish. If you squint & hold the book at arm’s length on an angle.

Another failing of the DC books (and sadly something that also afflicts Rebellion's line, to a lesser extent) is the shoddy repro.

Compare the Dredd story Fetish as printed in the DC Devlin Waugh trade and the presentation in the Hamlyn Fetish version - its a WORLD of difference. The DC version is almost unreadably dark and murky while the Hamlyn version looks lush and vibrant.

I do agree, the DC cover and paper stock are really shitty. One of the main reasons I want to replace my Nikolia Dante collections is I want respectable paper and matte cover stock.

DC has a historically bad habit at using really shitty paper for their collected editions. The 2000 AD collects got some of the worst of it.

In today's Thrillpowered Thursday, a very special look back at what really should have been the absolute, final episode of Slaine, if for no other reason than what happens in it is unforgettable and brilliant.  Go have a read!
