Funnily enough it never really bothered me that much.

I think there have been far, far worse in the prog, and I don't remember it dragging out as much as some.

Yes it was just, sort of... there. I couldn't really get up the energy to hate it*, but then again I haven't re-read it. I have re-read quite a lot of the early 90s progs and wanted to spoon my brains out with a spoon to stop the pain, if it hadn't been for John Smith throwing down the occasional oasis into the desert of dreams and some heavy self-medicating, I'd have ditched the prog then and might not have returned for a decade or so (although news of its resurgent greatness would have got to me eventually). I can't imagine Bison would have made me throw down my prog in disgust if I'd started reading again during that period. I do wonder about the demand for a collected edition though...

Didn't this lead to a 2-part Future Shock where the authors vented their frustration at the board in comically whiny fashion?

Ah now look what you did - I've had to dig those progs out, but it was only a panel or two taking a dig at messagebaords. Odd parallels with Atavar though, I don't think I'd have been happy with that if I was Dan Abnett.
