I'm totally new to 2000AD and just wanted to say hey to everyone. I'm excited to be here! Now I must get up to speed.

Cheers.

Welcome and don't be shy about asking for advice, we're full of it (and advice). ;)
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

hello and welcome

It's afriendly place, and there's nothing we like better than showing off our geeky knowledge to newcomers!

As a newcomer I'm curious - what drew you to 2000ad? Were you already a comics fan? And what are your fave strips so far?

Thanks for your welcome everyone.

To answer Dandontdare - I have been a comics fan (off and on) my entire life - mostly Marvel and DC. Over the last several years I have really enjoyed a lot of the smaller publishers and started to seek out more non-super hero books. I have always liked Alan Moore and Warren Ellis a lot! I'm always on the web looking for comic news, etc. I came across an article on either Newsarama or Combic Book Resources and it mentioned how good Judge Dredd and Strontium Dogs were. So, I ended up here. I don't know where I've been, but I have not heard anything about 2000 AD. I have heard of Judge Dredd, but never sought any books out.

I just added Prog 2012 to my pull list at my LCS - it will be my first 2000AD book.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, and welcome (I'm new too).

I can recommend you Defoe (two paperbacks sor far) by Pat Mills and Leigh Gallagher. It's kind of a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with non fictional characters (but fictionnal events of course). It is sets in 1666 during the great plague (here a plague of Zombies) and it features Isaac Newton, Oliver Cromwell, Madame La Voisin and much more.

I'm guessing from your answer you're from the U.S.- which is good news. 2000ad has always been criminally unknown across the pond, overshadowed by the Big Two, but Rebellion have made great strides in the last couple of years to raise its profile, with US-only collected TPBs published by Simon & Schuster, stalls at cons like San Diego, and they've even capitalized on Barnes & Noble's withdrawl of lots of DC titles to get the Judge Dredd Megazine stocked in their stores.

Spread the Word!

Well OK.

Considering you got hooked in by Dredd and SD that is a good place to start.

With Dredd we have some recommendations here:
http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,31063.0.html

Then once you've got a start and a feel for his world you could go for some of the best stories:
http://forums.2000adonline.com/index.php/topic,31032.0.html

Strontium Dog is easy - start with the Agency Files #1:
http://shop.2000adonline.com/categories/strontium_dog

Beyond that, then it depends on what you are interested in (as 2000 AD does sci-fi, horror and fantasy) but it'd be an idea to mix up some of the older classic tales (Slaine and ABC Warriors) with some newer ones (Nikolai Dante, Defoe, Caballistics, Inc., Cradlegrave, Necronauts and Zombo, perhaps). If you are enjoying the Dredd stories then there are a lot of great spin-offs like Judge Anderson, Low Life, Insurrection, Devlin Waugh, Hondo City Law (the name of the recent collection) and Missionary Man - you can't really go wrong there. You can nose around Wikipedia and see if anything else appeals.

As you are a fan of Alan Moore then you'll want his 2000AD work:

http://shop.2000adonline.com/products/ballad_of_halo_jones
http://shop.2000adonline.com/products/the_complete_dr_&_quinch

If you are outside the UK imports can be a little variable in price but someone like the Book Depository has worldwide free postage so you should be able to get most things without paying too much. If you are in America then have a look at the US editions, they'll usually be cheaper than importing the books and they already have a good selection of titles.

Those are just general recommendations, if you are interested in a specific genre or like something and want more of the same then that'll help folks refine them.

Welcome, pwog.  You've a lot of solid entertainment ahead.  I'm going to throw in my standard recommendation of Dan Abnett and Richard Elson's sublime Kingdom.
