Stevie's been thinking about this for some time.

What we need to do is to write a hit single for Kylie Minogue.

We then use the royalties to buy back from DC the rights for all the old IPC characters that they've left mouldering in a rusty filing cabinet under a blocked off stairwell.

With these characters we then launch a New Weird anthology title. Rope in China Melville to write the lead strip whilst farming the rest off to John Smith, Alec Worley, Al Ewing & fellow boarders.

SBT bangs out the editorials.

One thing I'd like to see is the development of the market in a more European way.

Yes, definitely.

Monthly/weekly comics hold very little interest for me, but I'd love to see a much bigger market for creator-owned graphic novels.

Grandeville is the right sort of thing, we "just" need about 50 more titles a year and we've got our industry back...

Soooooooo we need a Kylie hit first? Hmmm. I wonder if Al might be up for the job?

However, a New Weird anthology would be quite something and/or whatever Milligan and McCarthys were doing back in the day (Nouvelle Bizarre?).

Brendan has spoke about wanting to get a big fat reprint of his and Milligan's early work out there:

Quote
I think it's a criminal state of affairs that none of the work I did with Peter Milligan is in print! I think a collection of our work would be a good idea, bringing together some of the best comics from the '80s, like "Paradax!," "Freakwave," "Rogan Gosh," "Skin," "Sooner or Later" and "Mirkin The Mystic" -- all collected in one pulse-pounding publication. Whoops, I'm channeling Stan Lee!

As well as another Swimini Purpose edition (and a volume 2?):

Quote
There were, at least at one point, plans for an American release for your art book "Swimini Purpose." Is that still in the works?

I am going to release a new expanded edition of "Swimini Purpose" in about 5 years' time. I have accumulated and rediscovered lots of new visual material from old folios and found loads of artwork just lying around. When comics art dealer Albert Moy asked to buy whatever I had, I unearthed a lot of forgotten gems.

I'm even considering doing a "Swimini Purpose Volume 2" to go with a re-issue of a modified version of the original book. And a nifty slipcase for both editions. Getting legal clearances from comics companies and film studios etc. is a massive pain in the bum, though.

But it's something to look forward to, some years hence!

It strikes me that a Milligan/McCarthy collection would be straightforward enough as most of those titles are owned by them (Sooner or Later might be trickier) and the main hurdle would be time getting all the pages together and preparing it for print. It strikes me that it this would be a perfect project to run through Kickstarter - you could pre-sell the collection and get some extra cash together to pay someone to help get the pages together.

If that went well, and I can't see any reason it wouldn't be a success, you could then run another Kickstarter project to fund a new Paradax-style anthology, with the old hands and the Neo-mentalists like Ewing and Flint and other assorted oddballs who could produce so strange ideas (I'm sure John Smith has something up his sleeve that if pitched to Tharg would turn him a very light green).
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

A British superhero comic wouldn't go amiss I think, especially if it had a political edge to it. Given the crackpot politicians, rough economy, decaying inner cities and an all round changing landscape, it would be brilliant (IMHO) to see Britain be given something along the lines of a Watchmen-esque treatment.

I can just picture it now:

"Rusty shopping trolley in alley this morning, coin jammed in broken slot. This satellite town is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of booze and used johnnies and when the drains finally scab over, all the chavs will drown. The accumulated filth of all their chips and reality TV will foam up about their waists and all the pregnant teenagers and spin doctors will look up and shout "Give us an 'and!"... and I'll look down and whisper "Piss off." They had a choice, all of them. They could have followed in the footsteps of national treasures like my father or dear Maggie Thatcher. Decent folk who believed in Queen and country. Instead they followed the droppings of paedophiles and the loony left and didn't realize that the trail led over a precipice until it was too late. Don't tell me they didn't have a choice. Now the whole world stands on the brink, staring down into bloody Hell, all those Labour voters and Europhiles and Guardian columnists... and all of a sudden nobody can think of 'owt to say."

There is definitely a very 80s mood in the air. That mood helped fire up comics creators back in the day and I can see it inspiring new takes on superheroes. I'd imagine an anthology with gritty British take on superheroes would struggle to avoid such overtones.

Well someone needs to give them a nudge ;) I can't imagine they haven't been thinking along similar lines, but just in case...

In the small press comics digital hub thread John Caliber mentions how he thinks there should be some gritty reality comics and implied that the comics scene is perhaps too heavily invested in fantasy whether that be sci-fi, crime, superheroes or heroic fantasy. He suggested (amongst other things) a political comic and argued that comics as an artform suffered from not being aimed at a mainstream audience.

Whilst I might not like the thought of reading one of those comics being a scifi fan, I can see how the audience might change if, say, the Big Issue featured a comic written and illustrated by its vendors for example. Or there was a Coronation street tie-in like there is a Dr Who magazine.

That article in the Meg described Japanese comics devoted to sports stories, office manga and the like. In Europe you have all sorts of stories, especially thrillers. Perhaps we should be trying to emulate the American scene less and reaching out to an international audience more?

I will say though, that there have been a number of 'slice of life' and journalistic graphic novels published by major book publishers in the UK in recent years. These are the sorts of books that get reviewed in The Guardian. But do they sell?

Perhaps at school age children could to be taught how comics can combine word and picture for a much smaller budget than a film and challenge them to write about a variety of subjects. Get them whilst they are young and try to get them to realise the potential for the artform that I am frankly too old to realise. Many of them will have access to smartphones so someone should create apps that allow them to create comics then encourage them to share. Photoshop and Flash made art, photographic manipulation and animation available to a much wider audience than before and helped people who would never have thought they could do it get new jobs in these industries. Perhaps the new technology will bring in a revolution in comics subjects eventually.

For me, I would like to see historicals - is there a CJ Sansom of the comics world out there? I expect some people would like to see romance and sex comics if the hair-raising stuff I see on the Deviantart website occasionally are anything to go by... Would a rom-com work as a comic?

Well Denise Mina and Ian Rankin have both written Hellblazer stories, but I suspect the amount of money they make back from those kind of gigs hardly makes it worth their time and effort (Neil Gaiman has trouble justifying putting time aside for WFH gigs these days).

I expect some people would like to see romance and sex comics if the hair-raising stuff I see on the Deviantart website occasionally are anything to go by...

Although a niche market sex comics seem to do OK, especially if they are a little specialised - God knows how many furry comics there are out there. I also can't imagine comics like Tarot are selling on the story alone ;)

Would a rom-com work as a comic?

I think a variant of Rule 34 works for comics - if you can think of it then you could make a comic on it.

Rom-com comics? Sure and if done right I bet you could sell a lot - romance comics were one of the biggest selling of comics genres* and the massive success of manga in the West is partly due to shojo meeting the needs of the audience in this area:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_comics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Djo_manga

As with other ideas floated above I'd imagine you could come up with more than one idea for a themed anthology. With superheroes you could have a dirty take on them and a more typical approach, with politics you could easily have a satirically cartoony comic and one that is more facts based (as comics are great for getting across complex information).

The problem is growing the market and letting people know you are there and that will take time. Luckily digital might help people find the comics and buy them, so it might be we are in a better position that we were even a few years ago.

* The fact that superhero comics now dominate the American market is a historical accident largely caused by the introduction of the Comics Code in the mid-50s which lead to the demise of the most popular comics genres like romance, horror and crime,** leaving on the safe option: superheroes. The horror comics article at Wikipedia has a good overview (OK I'm biased as I started it but still...) and we suffered something similar  here too:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_comics

** Crime!! There is another example - you could come up with half a dozen ideas for distinct crime anthology comics: lurid true crime, detective fiction, noir, police procedurals, etc.

Anything will work in comic strip format, although I see a lot of comics written like screenplays - tonnes of dialogue and static characters panel after panel. This is better served by prose - comics are a visual medium which also demands visual variety; if an artist has to copy and paste identical panels in sequence, only changing the text in the dialogue boxes, the art after the initial panel is only serving to waste space. It's become the fashion to ignore the armoury of very useful comic strip narrative shortcuts and go 'longhand' - a new generation of artists may not even know they ever existed. Too much waffle, not enough speed.

I just started considering whether it's worth contacting the better-known novelists of contemporary UK fiction to see if any fancy having a go at writing their ideas for future fiction in GN format?

Can't hurt, although perhaps an anthology might be easier to commit to, serialising the work helps spread it out.

If the author's existing audience is to be targeted as potential GN readers then they will be used to complete stories in novel format - I don't think they'd go for serials.

Slightly OT, I wondered how well the comic book adaptation of Kidnapped by Alan Grant and Cam Kennedy sold? I thought Kidnapped was a superb piece of historical. I presume this is the sort of thing that Massacre For Boys would like to see more of?

Depends. Imagine if someone like Orion had a sci-fi anthology running stories from a range of their authors, for example. I wonder if approaching publishers might be an idea.

The idea of serialisation is possibly on a lot of authors minds - they could sell chapters for pennies as they go along.

Tricky to say as part of their plan was to give copies away. Because of that, I'd imagine the print run was impressive.
