Emperor actually put me onto Calibre, and it's a nifty piece of software but sadly it throws up an error when you try to convert them because of the way the DRM works on them :(

Can the caliber software do it for you?  It converts all sorts and send to the kindle.

Not if the files have DRM, as it'd be an easy way to strip that off.

You either need to get them in Kindle's own format or DRM-free .mobi, ePub or PDFs.

See, for example:

www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx3IRFCNF3E5K2W&cdPage=1&cdThread=Tx364XYU9P9BMM4

Seems Waterstones are launching their own electronic book (or have done) and so would want to ensure you buy your eBooks and reader from them alone:
www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14841692

Weirdly they have a DRMed ePub eBook on how to use the Kindle, which I assume can't be read in a Kindle:
www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/jim+cheshire/using+kindle+28ebook29/8580055/
if I went 'round saying I was an Emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
