Eagle Awards
« on: 03 January, 2012, 03:24:53 PM »
Nominations open for business

http://www.eagleawards.co.uk/nominations/

To avoid the FQP guys splitting their own vote I propose we unite behind one title.

My work appeared in Zarjaz during 2011 so I can't impartially propose which title we unite behind.

However, if someone else wants to name a title, I'll vote for it!

FFS! The Eagle Awards run longer than the DFS sale. Last year's pimp-fest only finished 5 minutes ago and then it begins again. Spine Chillers and George & Lynne - that's yer lot!

Also as prog 1752 got the cover of the year this yea we might as well throw our nominations behind that to ensure a placing on the final list.

I'm fine with getting behind Zarjaz and 1752.  And George & Lynne, if the man from Paisley insists.

Can we also continue to try and get Mr Wagner a Roll of Honour place. His continuing absence is getting embarrassing and makes a mockery of the category :S

Once again I'll vote for John but it is like pissing in the wind.

FYI here are my nominations and some of my thinking:

Favourite Newcomer Writer: Michael Carroll - Al is on there but I suspect we need to pass the torch on and Al has done enough work to fight it out in the larger category. Unfortunately, this category is weird and the winner tends not to be a newcomer but more the one who has recently got onto the radars of American comic book readers, but getting him onto the shortlist shouldn't be difficult.

Favourite Newcomer Artist: Tiernen Trevallion - destined to be massive and the real "find" of last year

Favourite Writer: Al Ewing - he has done some great work this year and deserves this

Favourite Writer/Artist: Bryan Talbot - Grandeville has been excellent

Favourite Artist: Pencils: D'Israeli - still no favourite artist and the pencils/inks breakdown seems to favour

Favourite Artist: Inks: D'Israeli - although thinking about it Gary Erskine might be a more obvious nomination as he has been doing inking on the prog

Favourite Artist: Fully-Painted Artwork: Alex Ronald - a lot of good suggestions there like Greg Staples and John Burns but, and I know I am biased, this is an obvious one for me ;)

Favourite Colourist: Abi Ryder - I've been very impressed by the colouring droids but her work on Nikolai Dante has been superb

Favourite Letterer: Jim Campbell - I mentally let him and Bolt fight it out, it got messy but Jim's boats swung it for him in the crucial final round

Favourite Editor: Matt Smith - although Tharg is also down there, I know they are different people but I hope they combine the two lots of votes

Favourite Publisher: Rebellion

Favourite American Comicbook: Colour: Thunderbolts - Jeff Parker and Kev Walker/Declan Shalvely are creating one of the best team books at the Big Two and bringing the title back to its core again

Favourite American Comicbook: Black and White: Walking Dead

Favourite British Comicbook: Colour: 2000ad

Favourite British Comicbook: Black and White: Zarjaz - I agree with Chris, the vote got awfully split last time and going for the 2000 AD fanzine might be the best shot

Favourite New Comicbook: Strip magazine - gotta be. Winning will be tricky once the US votes swing behind whatever Big Two titles get shortlisted but it'd be nice to get this through into the running as we don't get many new comics on this side of the Pond

Favourite Manga: Blade of the Immortal - I threw my vote behind this as I did enjoy the early books, even if I've not read much recently

Favourite European Comicbook: Requiem - it really is excellent. There is also a nomination for "Zenith by Grant Morrison" which is... odd

Favourite Web-Based Comic: Freakangels

Favourite 2011 Single Story: Judge Dredd - Choose Your Own Xmas - superb work from the Ewing droid

Favourite 2011 Continued Story: Judge Dredd

Favourite 2011 Cover: 2000AD Prog 1752 - winner of the cover of the year by a long chalk, we got last year's winner through to the shortlist and I can't see why we can't do it again

Favourite 2011 Original Graphic Novel: Grandville Mon Amour - I see Prog 2012 is in there but it isn't an OGN, then again neither are some others (quite a few trades sneaking in there). I was tempted to go for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: 1969 but as Grandeville didn't have a nomination and deserved one I thought I'd add it

Favourite 2011 Reprint Compilation: Cradlegrave - Zombo, Dante and Casefiles 18 are also in there but this is the one we asked for and it didn't disappoint

Favourite Comics-Related Book: Alan Moore: Storyteller

Favourite Comics-Related Movie or TV Show: Walking Dead

Favourite Comics-Related Website: 2000ADOnline

Favourite Magazine about Comics: Vworp Vworp - issue #2 was amazing

Roll of Honour: Carlos Ezquerra - OK it is a coin toss between him and John Wagner, but we get one this year and the other the next ;) The important thing is to pick one and go for it

Age: 35-54 - Blimey that is quite a range

...HE'S NEVER WON IT?!?!? - I feel ridiculous for voting Cam now, even though Cam himself is a legend...

Ah, I love the Eagle awards.
Checking the drop down options on the first day to see who has managed to put something relating to themselves in every category. Getting the "vote for me" tweets and facebook prompts every five minutes. Watching people pretend they dont care while casually dropping hints about their "nomination".

All that said, yeah I'd be happy to see Zarjaz pick one up and would be happy for anyone I know to get one if it gave them a jolly. Even voted myself (tho not FOR myself like every other small press monkey out there) but its the comic X-Factor, not the comic BAFTAS unfortunately.

The problem with the Eagles is that it relies on the public to decide the short list.
Then we all act surprised when a pile if fanboy wank and nobodies make the list.

Who did you pick then, Logan? Be interetsed in seeing those choices.

I've yet to vote this year, so thanks for any nominations for FQ etal. To be honest- losing four times in a row saps the enthusiasm.

Tony Lee made a similar point - he had nominations stripped from him for doing it but now everyone is up to it:

www.tonylee.co.uk/index.php?option=com_wordpress&p=361&Itemid=1

In the end it raises the profile of the award, so it can't be a bad thing, I just wish the Best Newcomer awards were a little more... sensible as it could be a big deal for an up and coming young writer and artist but... well Paul Cornell won it last year, 20 years after he first started writing comics ;)

I think this is the first year since 1976 that we've been unable to vote for Simon Spurrier as best newcomer.  ;)

You should add him in, it is almost like a tradition these days :)
