Prog 1765: Marry a Monster!
« on: 07 January, 2012, 08:43:26 AM »
COVER

A Steve Yeowell tribute/ pastiche to 50s romance comics for Dante. I need to think about whether it works for me. I can't remember the last time there was a speech bubble on the cover, never mind one with so much text. It's either genius or a "good idea at the time."

DREDD

Flint-abulous art. And it looks like it's all about to kick off. Not a lot more to be said but Wagner cranks the tension up a bit more.

GREY AREA

Still too early to tell. Has a nice Alien Nation vibe, with 24 undertones.

DANTE

Build up to the wedding. I can't help but think that Dante may escape on camera during the nuptials.

ABSALOM

Great stuff! "My nose is twitching." Heh.

STRONTIUM DOG

Best thing in a strong prog. Nice Bond-villain moment at the end. I love this story.

THRILLS OF THE FUTURE

Looks like the "What if" Prog has a Charley's War - Rogue Trooper mash up!

No more wet Progs, yay. But I can't see the thrill power escaping when I open it any more. Boo.

Haven't read it yet, but very pleased with the polythene wrap it came in :) All hail Denise.

Lovely prog without a dud in it and a plug for some new series of alternate "What if" stories though little detail as yet. Dredd and stronty are positively burning with excellent art and story and Grey Area and Absalom vying for me new fave. Dante also was excellent and in the past I've not always liked it that much but here it is superb.

Bloody hell cracking start to 2012.

Aye, great prog this week. Quite liked that cover, but as a Lichtenstien riff, I wish Steve would've gone a bit further with the style (maybe we were just spoilt by that D'israeli cover of the year!) Dredds bleedin' fantabulous, with Absalom giving him a run for his money. Those last couple of panels in each strip have me aching to see the next installments. Hurrah!  :D

I'm suprised and delighted to hear that Absalom is back in the prog, and this What If... series sounds interesting.  :D

I usually wait till I have the prog in my hands to judge a cover, but my first impressions is that that cover is fucking awful.  :o

Well the clear plastic wrapper is better than the old envelope. My prog used to arrive open and soggy.

Only had a chance to flip through it and not read it yet. Immediate reaction to the cover though is that it's terrible. And the more I look at it the worse it's getting  :(

Has the Prog always been sent straight from the printers? There's a Telford return address on the paper insert marked to PCP ltd a printing company apparently... not that any of that matters a jot just wondered?

Anyway as with many not had a chance to read it either, but thought I'd add to the cluttering of the review thread in my excitement at the new distribution.

Only thing I can add is not sure I get the 'Charley's War' link from the Thrills of the Future picture?

Is it just me, or does the gap between the Christmas and regular progs get shorter every year?

It used to seem like an eternity waiting for the first prog of the new year, but now the weekly cycle barely seems to be interrupted.

I certainly wasn't expecting a prog today.

Am I just getting old?

Does that mean you missed last week's?

Bah. The first sunny day in week and no Prog for Cosh. I can only assume the postie has rolled his trouser legs up and gone paddling in the White Cart.

COVERNicely bagged in clear plastic good mock Lichtenstien. mock comic stylee, but should have gone the whole hog. with lines and letratone dots etc.

DREDD wonderful top hole stuff art and story cooking!

GREY AREA skipped this will return

DANTE skipped this will return

ABSALOM skipped them to get to this...more great stuff from this pair, Cable St, Spring heeeled Jack and Romans what's not to like?

STRONTIUM DOG More crude stereotypes...just kidding, classic SD

THRILLS OF THE FUTURE what ifs .... are a bit worrying but the list of names attached makes my mind rest a bit easier. Looks a bit like Rogue goes a bit Nam in this...

With regards to the cover, the Lichtenstein idea came late. Considering the subject matter, I too would have loved to have seen a full on pop art attempt. The fact that it wasn't initially a Lichtenstein makes me wonder why Jena was wearing a purple wedding dress!?!

As for the prog itself, the line up is incredibly strong at the moment isn't it?

The build up in Dredd is almost unbearable, with fantastic Wagnerian humour weaved skill fully in the mix. Henry's art is just beautiful too. Wagner's scripts are so dense these days it seems to take ages to read an episode, glorious!

I'm loving Grey Area too. The world is fantastically evolved already and Karl Richardson's art is nothing short of spectacular.

The same goes for Absalom. Tiernen's art just blows me away, his Spring Heeled Jack was terrific and that last panel a joy!

Dante ripped my heart out, yet again. I'm gagging to see what happens at the wedding, next time Dante squares up against Dmitri is going to be epic!

Finally Stronium Dog is the icing on a very satisfying comicy cake!

All hail Tharg!

No, but I thought that was sent out early as I got it before Xmas.

Yeah the one we got on Christmas Eve was last weeks prog!

It's another brilliant reason to be a subscriber. For the last couple of years we've got the end of year prog, followed by the next one two weeks later, then the next one two weeks after that. Much nicer than waiting four weeks between thrills! Good old Tharg!
