Risk The board game version

Can anybody give me any sure fire tactics to help me win at this?

I know someone who's utter over confidence at this game needs to be crushed....

Not played Risk for ages - There's better games nowadays - I prefer:

A Brief History of the World: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/46007/a-brief-history-of-the-world
or
Smallworld:http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/40692/small-world

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/181/risk#forums has a strategy section - so there's probably something there to help.

Me and my mates (plus my son) often play Risk! and History of The World (that is the one before the game Pyroxian mentions and I hear is quite different but no idea how different)

I think CF is quoting a very common tactic.

Also holding South America with Central America and North Africa as a buffer is popular.

Avoid starting a land war in Asia...

Bluff,always bluff.

Don't get too cocky. Everyone will gang up against you. I stopped playing a long time ago.

Patience. Slowly push outward and don't have too many borders you can't defend. Resist taking that one extra country if it thins out your armies even a little bit.

Quite so, better to just get that one territory to get a card than to spread too thinly.

Slow and steady. Build up your forces and be sure to leave enough reserves in key locations to defend against attacks. If you can secure and fortify Australia your job will be a lot easier. And remember the Ukraine is not weak.

Yes, don't be too aggressive as Risk definitely favours defensive players, who always win ties.

I never liked Risk but I'm pretty much unbeatable at Monopoly. It's because I'm an utter bastard.

But Monopoly's just luck, surely?

And what other version of Risk is there?

I have deliberately started both those sentences with conjunctions, by the way.

And then compounded the offence with a spilt infinitive and possibly a dangling participle.  Shameless.
