I was forced to play this at Xmas by my very competetive serving-military and lifelong wargamer brother. Naturally he won. I came in 4th out of 5, barely beating my 11 yr old nephew. Bloody stupid game.

The only useful tactic I ever heard has already been mentioned - secure australia.

Forget Risk. It gets too repetitive very quickly. Try Axis & Allies for something more complex or if you're really up for a challenge Europe Engulfed.

But Monopoly's just luck, surely?

Luck? Ah... yes. We must play it sometime. Bring your wallet.

Sounds like you will make a fortune if he does... 'luck' in Monopoly is like 'luck' in poker.

Or do what my brother-in-law does, start to lose, get stroppy, then flip the board over, storm away and call the game stoopid. Worst of it is he's the one that wants to play.

I tend to shy away from long board game...especially those that take so long to set up yer board before you start....so i give you..

Ave Ceaser - chariot race game ,,simple to play  even easier to lose at!

Midnight Party - when the ghost hits the party find a room and lock yerself in so no other player can hide there.

221B -  Sherlock holmes game...trawl around old london searching for the clue that give you motive, method, guilty party etc...while closing off parts of the board to other players.

Jack - the Ripper, on player takes the part of Jack and tries to commit the crimes and escape while other players try to shut him down.

I have more but beer stops me thinking...
