Despite nearing my mid-40s ive never actually seen Ferris Buellers day off.
...anyways shouldnt the 80's have been put to bed by now? Surely we should be in the midst of a 90's revival?

Ferris Bueller's a smash - I defy anyone to not enjoy it.

It's basically the story of how a manipulative, popular, privileged little sod gets everything he wants, but something about it just works, and keeps the audience on his side, largely due to the casting of Broderick. I think it works because Broderick is utterly charming, but doesn't in any way look or sound like the conventional obnoxious, bratty, popular schoolkid.

I can't imagine a modern remake working in any way whatsoever - they'd probably cast someone like Zak Efron.

I watched it again the other night, inspired by said commercial.  I was struck this time by the firm conviction that Bueller is an utter shit, someone who deserves quite a serious kicking, but as Radiator says...  somehow it works, and you end up rooting for him.  Possibly, I suspect, because he really is just a righteous dude.

As I'm sure I remarked here before, I first saw this film on a school video recorder (before we had such a miraculous thing), when I was maybe a few years younger than Ferris, and it was like a portal into another world.  The MTV astronaut link at the start was the first time I'd ever seen that channel or anything like it - it looked rebellious, it looked good.  Ferris had a computer with a modem and a giant synthesiser in his bedroom (which was itself about half the size of our entire house) - our school had exactly one computer for 800 students (ah my beloved Apple IIe), and you can be damn sure it didn't have a modem.  He could order stuff in a restaurant.  His friend had a car.  His younger sister had a car.  He could drive.  What the hell was this world he lived in?  It was a world I wanted.

While this is true, I think it works equally because of the co-stars, particularly his gawky best friend.  (I forget his name.) That kid goes through quite a journey, much more so than Ferris himself.

I preferred Ferris when he was playing  tic-tac-toe with Joshua.
