the stand outs are Fink, Slaine, and the Last American.
Despite Micks work on it, i never could get into Slaine. To this day, ive hardly read any of it.
The Last American, for me, is perfection.
A lot of fans were left scratching their heads with the later stuff, and ill admit, it took a while for me, but i love it. Have a real soft spot for those Howler episodes.
All time Dredd faves though has got to be Cursed Earth, 1981 Annual, and Fink.

....and great to see that art, robocook. Never really cared much about production art tbh, but when you see a lovely hand coloured example like that, then Hell yes!

I'd be happy with that level of reproduction in the forthcoming covers book.

I was wondering if there was any correlation between this blog and the art book ? Great stuff.

As were talking about all things Mick, never seen this before (also recently found some Hellraiser art he did in the 90's)

Was a big reader of Action and Battle, but by the time they'd both merged i was onto pastures new. Still, a fantastic cover, and would have been great to see Mick do some WWII stuff.

Doesn't look like it, unless Steve is being overly modest... I posted a comment on the blog asking about this previously.

Steve: "As for the book... don't actually know anything about it."

C'mon Tharg - get these in the book; surely the best repro potential we're likely to see?

That 'Battle' cover is amazing! Personally I loved McMahon's earlier Dredd work (Cursed Earth - Fink period) but never really appreciated his Slaine work until years after its publiction...now I see it for the work of pure genus that it is. My favourite artists are always those that 'challenge' and that's what he does by always evolving his style and approach. I remember Bolland saying (while he was working on Camelot 3000 I think) that 'I inked myself into a corner' - McMahon avoided that trap nicely...

This really proves that we need a big book of McMahon art especially for the forgotten covers.
