Prog Golden Age: now is the time?
« on: 08 February, 2012, 11:20:37 AM »
As highlighted elsewhere... we need to know:

Are we now entering a new Golden Age of The Prog, in the middle of it, or is this just a blip and the normal love three/hate two service will be resumed as soon as possible?

I will name him Tharg, and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him.

As I said, rudely interrupting the Prog thread, I think we're the middle of one (well lets hope in the middle and not say towards the end) and have been for some time. The exact start of these things is incredibly hard to pin down but I looked at this a wee while ago (for the life of me can't remember?) and went for Prog 1632. Why, well the start of Zombo, followed by Cradlegrave the next prog. Don't think there's been a duff spell of any significant length since then.

I think this current "golden age" has lasted since Prog 2000, and the Rebellion takeover. And whereas the original "golden age" may only have lasted three or four years tops, this current one has been going strong for over twelve years now.

I'd certainly say that since I started reading again at prog 1300 it's been mainly fantastic. I haven't liked every story but I've liked most of them and loved a fair share too.

This is a Golden Age right now and long may it continue.

Yeah this is a view I can strongly agree with but was trying to define the real, absolute high. A Golden Age in the Golden Age if you like. Certainly 2005 was another astonishing high for me.

I think I'd find it impossible to narrow it down further- I'd be, in effect, looking for a run of 'perfect progs'- and even this week's teaches me that such a thing would be impossible to isolate. I mean- the current one, on sale today, features not a single page I didn't enjoy. Long gone are the days when only one or two strips would be worth reading- and that's why I have to say it's since 2000. We're a bit lucky, really, to have a comic that is continually as good as it is. Any "golden age" is defined by the quality of the strips on offer- and looking back at the last twelve years, it's all been excellent. Well, mostly.

I wrote on my blog not so long ago that I felt 2000AD was going through a golden age, which I really think it is. Long may it continue.

Surely short run can't be classed as a Golden Age. What made 2000's Golden Age really great was the tradition between stories that kept the Thrillpower going.
At the moment Dredd & Stront are on top form but that's as expected.
The weak link is Dante, the second best Thrill in the Prog (and at some points the best) but its reaching it's end and then what?
Where's the next big thrill, where's the next strip that will excite as much as Dante has.
Whilst 2000 has its stable of thrills I can't see the next big thing.
Theres always going to be Dredd but Stront will be sparodic due to the demands on Carlos and Pat Mills just keeps dredging up past glories.
Where's the future War story, new robot story, space adventure or something that really would make it a Golden Age.

2000's great at the moment but its no Golden Age.

I think Kingdom has the potential to be the next big thing but Dan Abnett needs to get writing!

The Meg's never been consistently good for me, but every time I'm ready to give it up there's a great strip that keeps me coming back.

I prefer the 2000AD's 'original' Golden Age because everything - even the misfires - were fresh and new, unlike much I'd ever seen in comics before. What we're seeing now is definitely great - I mean, 2000AD is the only comic I buy regularly any more, so that's saying something.

2000AD has been, as far as I'm concerned been in a new 'Golden Age', for quite a number of years.I'd go as least as far back as the Dredd 'incubus ' story which was quite a while ago.Sorry you dont like Dante Logan but I think it's one of the best things to come out of 2000AD.

The Meg however, contains far too many unrelated articles ,like film reviews-would much prefer if it ditched the extra reprint mag and included more original work inside.

PS Does anyone know if the film rights to Dante have been bought by anyone?

Think you should re read my post as you obviously missed where I said Dante was the second best thing in the Prog and at times the best.

The Prog has been constantly Arsom for some time now. Its just a shame the sales (from previous thread discussions) don't reflect it.
