WARNING: THIS IS A BITCHY REVIEW

I've read the book, I've seen the movie - were they the same story?  Did the film even have a story?
Visually brilliant (except for the feeling I had that Gollum/Smeagol was a cross between Dobby the House-Elf & Jar-Jar Binks) with brilliant fight / war scenes.
However, for film over three hours long they missed the beginning (they stuck the first chapter at the end of the last film, remember?) and they missed quite a bit of the ending (presumably to make the last film even longer?)
Faramir is made out to be some evil twisted tyrant, rather than the wise & heroic chappie he should be, and kidnaps Frodo & Sam taking them to Gondor where they almost die in a big battle against orcs/nazgul.
Gimli appears to be the butt of all the camp jokes in the film (most unbefitting behaviour for a Dwarf - especially asking Aragorn to toss him!)
The Ents come across as being very hasty people, deciding in their meeting to not help the cause & changing their mind after Merry & Pippin trick them into seeing the damage Saruman has done to the forrest.
When Theoden's councillor Wormtongue appeared on the screen he looks so "Evil" it's funny, esp. with the evil music (I was expecting a BOO HISS! sign to be held up for him!)
There were other major plot errors that I can't be bothered to detail here, suffice to say that I didn't really enjoy the film much... which is a shame because I really liked the first one & still have high hopes for the third.
Last gripe: Aerwin (sp?) (Liv Tyler) is in this film more than she was in the last one.

Overall: Nice big battle scenes, but I much preferred watching McAlmont & Butler who I saw playing a gig next door to the cinema just before hand.

Better set your phaser to stun.

Two Towers won't be released here in HK until mid-January.

Still, even then I probably won't go to see it, I'll just wait and rent the movie when it comes out on DVD. Although I read Lord of the Rings as a kid, I can't say I'm a big fan. Give me sci-fi over fantasy anyday.

Also, I who wasn't that impressed with the first movie. IMO the acting, CG and overall production values seemed about on par with one of those made-for TV series like Gulivers Travels (the Ted Danson one). In fact when we went to see the first movie, Mrs. HiEx fell asleep less than half way through.

I don't know, I liked the first one, having just seen the extended version, it added a lot to the movie (and not just in extra footage).

Having seen most of the documentaries, I was really impressed to see how much effort went into making the special effects not seem like speical effects, so it may not look as impressive as you think it would.

I kind of get the impression that the whole climax of the second movie is the big battle, I'd like to know if thats any good.

Cheers
Paul

The battle of Helm's Deep is fantastic - there's no doubt about that... also the Ents trashing Orthanc is brill.  The other stuff (the changes in plot) I found disappointing and distracted me from enjoying the whole...

MORE BITCHY SPOILERS:

And I DO MEAN spoilers! so if you don't want it SPOILT then STOP READING!!
In the book: The women & children of Rohan hide out in some other town while the men ride to war at Gandalf's suggestion to help the seige at Helm's Deep.
In the film: Theoden flees their city with everyone (men, women & children all) to take refuge in Helm's Deep against Gandalf's warning that it's a bad idea & that Helm's Deep will be a death-trap with no escape.  O and a huge army of Elves turns up to help.  Huh???

Can I say again that the battle scene was brilliant?

Yeah well, it IS Brad Dourif after all. He is the master of oily, pop-eyed creeps...

Yeah, the battle of Helms Deep was o.k - not more than that though - but was ruined by cutting to what Frodo and the others are up to. Stopped the fight dead.
Gollum - very good
Orcs fighting amongst themselves - really good
The Balrog recap at the start - best thing in the film.
Trouble is, Two Towers is telling 3 stories at once and thats possible in a book but less so in a film.
And the worst thing? Frodo is almost given over to the ring, stands in front of a Nazgul on a dragonthing, the dragonthing gets hit by ONE arrow and flies away! I mean come on - he HAD him right there and he flies away?????
The perspective on that chairs all wrong

All that Dwarf tossing would explain why the cinema floor was so sticky last night.

"Have you seen the Star Trek movie poster?"

More to the point, have you seen the photos of Marina Sirtis at the Star Trek Exhibition launch?

Jean-Luc Picard, Deanna Troi, and it's always nice to see a representative from the Starfleet accounts department...

Saw Two Towers yesterday.
Found it to strangely like eating steamed fish with boiled rice. Rather bland even with the added parsely on top. Rather like the first.
Still, good eyecandy though.
