will we find the media calling foul ?
« on: 15 January, 2003, 01:10:15 PM »
the latest meg offers the new thrill Black Siddha
an excellent and artistic portrayal.i for one and really looking forward to this next month.

i cant think of a more obvoius time when in our history we have taken on such a subject with such overt nods to the cultural norms now found in the uk which many years ago where not the norm.

i feel this is a very bold step for rebellion to be attached too.all respect for what i would imagine to have been an editorail decsion.
will we note media interest? remains to be seen. but what ever the response from the masses either none or some. .
the meg one again pushes the line a bit further.

i note this as i live in a very very multi racial enviroment and some of my colleges discussed the story after noticeing it.
the talk ranged from  not correct to be portraying such imagies in such a way. to how well drawn it was.
any others feel this is a bold direction to take on.

Can't see the meeja taking much notice of 2k or the Meg for controversy's sake. Maybe the odd bit of cuddly satire now and then.

Kind of reminds me of a Toxic strip, or maybe one of the late Crisis ones.

I dont see why it should be controversial all sorts of religions and myth systems are strip mined in comics don't see why it should make a difference where the legends are from.

Why should the media be interested?  What's controversial about it?  It's just yet more myth-based Millsian cod-mysticism.

i admit to being out of the UK a long time.i was taking into account the very fact it uses images of ethinic and sensative background. but i cannot realy speak of the level of acceptance of such things in the UK.
but it stirred a lot of discussion in my enviroment.( singapore. until last year such things as 2000ad where on the non import list still)
here such things as images of daites is not taken lightly.
but did start a heated disscusion within the tamil speaking staff in my work place, whilst the younger ones felt it was well depicted some of the older members where a disturbed that such things should be depicted in such a way.

you have to remeber here. its all shiney on the surface. but scratch a bit and you really see its true colours are not the shiney city you see in the brochures.

this is the first time i have seen this kind of thing openly displayed here.there are only three western comic shops all of which opened in the last 8 months.

so in this country the fact that comic have been doing this for a long time. is not actaully correct.
i left the UK some 14 years ago. when such thigns where not the norm so so speak as they are now.

Ah, right! I doubt anyone in Blighty would lose sleep over it, but I imagine it would be a very thorny issue over there.

You're better placed and more informed on this, DD. Was it an objection against icons being reduced to comic characters? Or more about the story putting deities in a bad light? Or what? I dunno, it sounds more like an age gap thing than a purely heretical one.

bit of both in fact.
the whole western comic thing is gaining ground big time right now.
in some ways it mirrors many facts stated in the TPO about the british comic industry in the 70,s and 80,s.
censorship being a hypocritcal, double standards etc.
like every thing out here.nutty as friut cake.
dont talk about sex. south east asia hoiday chaps?;~)
western comics BADDDD, magna and jap ones good, with school girls and rapes by the score.
westerners will detroy our culuture baddd. lets knock down a temple and build a sky scraper..

i think its the first time they have seen it and as such the first time is the one that sticks with you. dont recall any of the marvel characters.main stream ones featuring this kind of thing.tooth is gaining ground fast. and this kind of sticks out.and gets the players in the market great interest. may well be why they seem to playing it up a bit. shop window display of the meg etc.

Blimey. I hadn't really thought about it like that. Do you think if the Meg goes on sale in India there'll be a bunch of BJP party nutcases going round to Pat Mills house to torch it?

Black Siddah comes across to me as a kind of 13/Finn hybrid, could be interesting could be shite, we'll have to see.

I hope the media over there don't get wind of it. However unintentional any religious offence is, import bans have happened for less. Keep us posted, DD :)

tell you what tho' ain't it interesting / heartening(?) to hear that the world is not one homogenized mono-culture yet?
thru this board i have come to see that there are many subtle ( & not so )differeneces between where i stay & the rest of the UK. obviously ther is lots of wee differences region to region, town to town. & unless you are exposed to other places you're not gonna see it. Its been enlightening chaps.
