I was driving through Longleat once and saw quite a few large cats roaming around the countryside. Shit myself and wound up the windows, the cars in front seemed to be driving really slow and a tail back was forming.

Interesting thread.

I have told this story before but i have seen what is known as a Shuck which is a phantom black dog one night when i went for a night walk with a couple of friends in the woods close to where i lived in Hastings.

[do a search here for "Spooky Story" and you should find it.

Its eyes were a burning orange color that glowed in the dark and if you want an accurate representation of what they looked like then look at the end of a burning cigarette in the dark as thats exactly what they looked like.It was also much larger than a normal dog and i sat there staring at it and it was staring back and sort of moving its head up and downwhile it was watching.I was in a field sitting under a large oak tree when this happened and along the perimeter of the field were rusty iron railings and beyond that were woods but the dog thing didnt break cover and enter the field but it was watching through the railings.I got the impression that it wasnt something physical but it was stocky like a Rotweiller type dog but it was a LOT larger.

One of the friends i was with couldnt see it despite the fact i was pointing it out but the other did and the one that did didnt say anything while it was going on but just after the dog thing disappeared described exactly what i saw.

The curious thing was when i was watching it i didnt feel any fear whatsoever as it was more like fascination and curiosity but i sort of get a shiver thinking about it now.I just stood my ground as it were as i dont scare very easily.I do feel fear but i can control it and not react to it.

This event lasted a few minutes.

The field has a very old feel to it and whenever i was in this field it always felt like i had gone back in time if that makes any sense.

I read an article in a local paper concerning some cats that had been partially devoured. Examination of the corpses suggested a big cat was responsible.

What I found strange was that the specialist mentioned in the article that he'd seen a black panther in the area, (this seemed to be written in a rather matter of fact tone) and the areas mentioned are near where I live.

I don't live out in the sticks by the way. Downham, Bromley (that's SE London) to be precise.

I'll admit I've got my doubts concerning that article though, but it would be kinda cool were it true.

I haven't seen any big cats first hand outside of the zoo and a safari park.  I didn't even see any lions when I went to Zimbabwe. (I did see lots of other fabulous animals though.)

I did see a massive black beetle just lying on the pavement though! I looked it up on the internet, and I'm pretty sure it was a female Stag Beetle! (Yeah, I know not the same league is it?)

Have any of these ABC in the UK ever been verified with photos and footprints etc ?

There have been photos, but it's usually very difficult to accurately guage the scale - instead of a Big Cat, they may just be, well, big cats.

This fox/puma hybrid that Rich saw sounds interesting. I saw a fox the other day sitting at the side of the road waiting for a gap in the traffic. I saw it saunter accross in my rear view mirror after I passed. Not really Fortean but I love seeing real wild animals like foxes and squirrels - I bet in 200 years people won't believe me. Yeah Soylent Green that's the future!

I don't know if any of you will believe me, but I'm pretty sure I saw Bigfoot six years ago.

My friend Tom Collins (yes, I've heard the joke that seeing Bigfoot was brought on by a little too much Tom Collins, but this Tom Collins is my best human friend) and I used to hike the Appalachians every year, starting at a different point each go so we could see as much of the mountains as possible. The last year we went, we stopped for the night. On one of the ridges above us we thought we saw a manlike shape crouched and staring at us, but we figured the shadows were playing tricks on us, that it was just a rock or a tree stump or something, so we started throwing rocks at it to see which of us could hit it first - and whatever it was, threw rocks back at us before going away! That was pretty freaky, but we weren't scared at all, just kind of weirded out.

Shame my father in law isnt still with us- he'd've loved that story, as bigfoot was an interest of his throughout his life, living as he did up a mountain in Canada.
The subject of big cats and foxes is interesting. We are inundated with foxes where we live- they raid our bins, fight and fuck in the streets, and run past our house every night, screeching like a hungry baby. Last year, i had an ongoing battle on a Wednesday night to keep one particular fox out of our bins; which ended with me buying dog food and leaving it out for him just before he was due. It worked for a while, but one night i was lying reading in our bay window when i heard our bins go. I opened the curtain to scare him off and was confronted by the biggest fox ive ever seen. At least twice the size of any ive encountered before, he was absolutely massive, grey in the moonlight, and was staring at me with a look that was almost human. That's what struck me most- his eyes. My very loud 'fuck ME!' scared him off, and i got outside just in time to see him scarpering off over the West Hill.
I sat up for several nights, hoping he'd come back, but he didnt.

My wife wasnt very impressed when i shook her awake at 1am shouting 'ive just seen a werewolf at the window, going through our bins!'
But what can you do?
