Wow, these amazing insights have totally ruined all 'former colleague turned villain spends decades creating secret elite army under the heroes' noses' stories for me forever.  It's a good job no-one else has ever written one, and that it isn't a SF/adventure staple of which this would be a perfectly entertaining version.
