I was really surprised at how the man himself views his own art on the recent thrill cast e.g. he doesn't seem to rate it as highly as we do, he gets bored with a style after a while and is always seeking out new styles as a result.

Personsally I prefer his Judge Child to Block Mania era Dredd to anything else. He also explained why we won't see that again- which is a real shame IMHO.

Basically I don't really like anything since original Slaine run e.g. ABC Warriors The Third Element, Slaine Book of Scars, the page in Prog 2000....I know heresy round here no doubt.

But when he gets it right ...well not many come close - not even Henry Flint ( who I view as the modern day equivalent).

Hate to say it, but I kind of see where you are coming from. His art over the last 20 years or so is highly eclectic but I appreciate the skill having seen his earlier work.
Purely from a personal perspective I enjoyed McMahon circa Judge Child best as well along with his followers Flint and Hairsine. On those two Hairsine's style for Wilderlands was pure McMahon and better for it while Flint has improved as he has become more and more his own man.
I think the way I look at McMahon is rather like Picasso (no idle comparison) in that he clearly is a master artist who drew conventionally and learnt his craft before developing into more abstract styles. His Dredd figure these days is clearly an anatomical distortion but the underlying basis is perfectly correct. It makes for a deceptively simple style that lesser artists might think they could do but is actually a product of decades of knowledge and innate talent.

Much of our reaction to art is subjective. One thing I've always loved about McMahon is the dynamic nature of his composition. His style might have changed, but the sense of movement within still images remains. (I also really rate his newer style; I love the strange and angular nature of it, and its unique edge.)

I know what I've just said but, wow! That man almost makes mecwant to put down my pens in despair.

Fondled a copy of this in the shop today. Oh my Dok, it's one beautiful floppy thing. Trying to scrabble the cash together now.  Hand out of my wallet, Tharg you rapacious alien, do Betelgeusians know it's Christmastime at all?

The best Dredd story ever. Prog 61 also has probably the best 2000AD cover ever. It also has the covers that were omitted from the hardback included (#74 and 82).

My edition is 140/200.

Bought this on Saturday because I'm a fool. Justified it to myself because it seems to be reprinted at original size (and thus wont fit on the shelf with the Case Files!)

Thought that was the case from the quick flip-through I did when my copy turned up last week but hadn't got around to doing an actual comparison with the hardcover. Does make me feel slightly less guilty about double-dipping (not that I felt that guilty to begin with). My copy is number 198/200.

And, fact fans, while including 2 more covers it also omits the Cursed Earth map.
(My paperback is a Christmas pressie for a lucky so-and-so :-) )

I have double, or possibly triple, dipped.

Wasn't going to bother with this, but seeing this photo now has me a tad conflicted. And interesting to hear that it has differences from the previous release.

Mmmmmm.....

Cracked and ordered it. Losing count of how many versions I have of this tale.
Mick's signature, new cover, artcard and complete covers swung it.
This stuff makes me happy and doesn't hurt anyone so no problem.

Didn't notice the map wasn't there originally.

The only thing I would have liked to have had included was the Eagle Comics covers by Brian Bolland.
