Hello, everybody! You may remember me from waaaay up this thread. It's only been two and a half years since I resolved to begin a man cave project, so thought I should report back. My progress has been: bugger all.

Due to some unexpected work disruption (my job evaporated twice but turned into a major promotion that keeps me away from home a lot) and some medical issues (four bouts of eye surgery, with procedures five and six coming this winter), the opportunity to potter around in the basement has not yet arrived.

Hope remains, and is likely to present itself in the now-traditional form of a trip to Ikea and many hours of ripping open boxes. Yes, my collection is still boxed up, awaiting the right moment. Like King Arthur. Or Cthulhu.

I did, however, have a little delve into just a few boxes to find 2000 AD action figures and a few other items, to display in our family room. This is because my children (now aged six and 10) are themselves little geeks, for Star Wars and Harry Potter respectively, so we decided to express ourselves together through home decoration.

Here are the early results:

So we have various Dreddish things there, including my lovely PJ Holden sketch. The Daleks are those faux-Lego things, which are pretty cheap and easy to cheat with, because they come in "blind" packs which are soft so can be thoroughly groped before purchase. Rose owns the two Potter things and Max has the BB-8 and the Gundam. G'nort is on a different shelf because he's a knob.

The shelves themselves were repurposed from a medical testing centre and may once have held cages full of unfortunate rodents. I think the beginnings of a display of geekery are a much better use for them.

Finally, my apologies for years of delay. Please accept my assurances that, one day, my man cave will happen...

It took me 2 1/2 to unpack our boxes of books and DVDs when we moved house. 2 1/2 years to get shelves up and painted. So you'd think I had some empathy BUT NO I didn't make pathetic excuses like major job unheveal and eye scalpel cutting (I shudder as I type) - I - don't achieve cos I'm a shiftless no-mark I don't need silly little excuse.

You sir are a tease popping on here with you words of man cave, but no man cave. With you flithy pictures of dirty, dirty grubby boxes full of the good stuff. Or so you say. All we see is PJ and G'Nort, its a poor return.

I remember when you was regal and treated your subjects harsh but fair...

...or in other words hope Canada is treating you well and the eye thing ain't too bad, sounds nasty.

Thanks, lads. Fingers crossed I'll get the bionics soon.

And I am utterly desperate to get into those boxes. Remember I packed them for emigration, not just a house move. So some of that stuff hasn't been seen for five years. Argh!

Enjoy yerself Trouty. I'm returning from wilderness years (20+) and while it's no literal emigration, I continue to look forward to rediscoveries 'cos they remain a source of joy.

Looking at new book cases and looking at either idea billy or kallax but wondered if the billy range is strong enough to hold the weight of a full shelf of books Ie hatchet partwoks without bowing

Cheers in advance
