M.I.K.

I think this deserves a link...

Concrete Block 15

Wasn't Battle Of The Planets in its original Japanese incarnation (whatever that title was) vaguely pornographic, somewhat typically of Japanimation? Y'know, Princess on the receiving end of some bukkake action from Keyop and the gang?

Or did I just dream that? Damn.

Art

Wasn't ULYSSES 31 based on some kind of Eurocomic with semi-pr0n content, or did I just imagine that?

Byron Virgo

Either way, I demand to hear more...

SamuelAWilkinson

How has this thread gone on two pages with nobody mentioning MASK?
Nobody warned me I would be so awesome.

Matt Timson

But Mask was shit.

I think they had to edit Battle of the planets for violence as Mark's boomerang tended to stick in people.  Or cut their heads off.  Or something.
Pffft...

Concrete Block 15

I know that the 7-Zark-7 and his robo-dog linking segments were created especially for the Western version; they don't appear in the Japanese original.

DavidXBrunt

One of the most fascinating, and disquieting things a kid could watch...

The western version had them visiting other planets all the time, but the original show was set entirely on Earth, the team's impressive genocidal campaign against Zoltar's henchmen (who was a hermaphrodite in the Japanese version) was changed via editing to be directed against robots, and Keyop's dialogue was made into beeps and whistles because the original Japanese dialogue was pornographic filth (usually) aimed at the token bird in the group - which is why you can still see her visible disgust after he's spoken in many scenes of the English-language edit.
There was an uncut update of the show released under the name Gatchaman in the west, which was quite entertaining in a thuggish way.

Bico

I saw the word 'moomins' and clicked the back button immediately.  Stop-go freaks creeped me out when I was younger - I have no desire to see that thing in the forest again, whatever it was, and whatever it was up to.

Byron Virgo

Christ, don't! The Moomins still scary the shit out of me now, the creepy stop-motion fuckers!

DavidXBrunt

Heh heh heh.

I'm not the only one freaked out by them then?

JOE SOAP

Wasn't Zoltar in Battle of the Planets a "space" haemaphrodite in the original Jap-anime. He was able to change sex and become a female who was a double agent in Gatchaman. Bits of the original story were left in the US story to confuse matters more.

I vaguely remember he commited suicide in a volcano out of frustration or sumpin'.

the3rdman

there's too many great themes to mention but keeping on a classic stop motion topic
