my shitty toshiba sattelite pro was being very unresponsive in the fact as soon as i botted it up and got asked for my password it went black... and wouldnt even work in safe mode so i couldnt scan for nasties. i decided (probably hastily) to factory reset it but then realsied i havent backed up family photies etc for ages and have indeed lost the back up stick anyway!
Have my pics of my wee lassie gone for good or can they be retrieved from some hidden diverse corner of my harddrive?

If the physical parts of the HDD haven't been overwritten yet you can get the files back. Google for undelete utilities such as Recuva.

tried that one first and found it to be more hassle ,then i pressed buttons and searched for data revovery and i somehow managed to find what i was looking for on a back up on the d drive which i didnt know about! so precious memories back and backed up onto an external harddrive i found kncking about.

Good to hear you got your images back. Perhaps also consider backing up to a second source, such as an online service. Yahoo! offers 1TB of free storage for images, which can all be made private. Alternatively, Dropbox gives you some free space and has image uploading, while the likes of Backblaze offer full-drive back-ups to the cloud (albeit for a free).
