Splank!

Just joined.  Longtime reader of British Comics, write a Blog called Splank! about old British Comics and new self-published comics from the UK and Ireland.  I've just started a series of articles on Sports comics in 2000AD which some of you might find interesting.  Second part should be published later this week.

Thank you ZenArcade.  Should have part 2 ready later this week.

I find your argument that the launch line-up stories were just regular seventies comic strips treated with a transparently thin sci-fi veneer very persuasive ...

Welcome aboard.

Nice article and I agree with the point that often establishing the sport in a sport strip builds the foundation for that strip. Its world building with a ball (or whatever the sport involves). I know people have disagreed with this point and gone down the line that the sport is secondary to the story, characters etc. but I hold it forms the world in which they operate and needs to work and draw the reader in. Anyway look forward to reading the rest and more importantly.

Have fun.

Can anyone tell me how long the posting restrictions last?  Have tried to get involved in a couple of areas but appear to be blocked from replying.

Welcome and may I say that's a fascinating blog you have there.

Most surprised to see on one of your posts that Marvel's Thor appeared in Eagle – on the front page. Who would have thought? Mind you, Marvel reprints were appearing all over the show, pre-Marvel UK. I have some remaining scraps of a TV21 with John Romita Spider-Man.

Splank!

Re. Thor, or rather the Tales from Asgard backup stories appearing in the Eagle.   This was at the time that Odhams had the UK rights to reprint Marvel Superheroes.  The Power comics line, Wham!, Smash! and Pow! along with Terrific and Fantastic were owned by the same company as owned The Eagle.

While I'm doing the research for the next part of the Sports in 2000AD series of posts, a fill in post on the first Science Fiction novel I ever read.   A Dan Dare spin-off novel from the mid-fifties that I read more than a decade after it was published.
