It's probably the same as Indigo Prime - if I went back at the end of the story and reread it, I'd find the lunatic knew what he was doing all along.

The difference for me is that I'm interested enough in the premise, aesthetic, and the adjectival Tourettes prose style of John Smith for me to enjoy Indigo Prime on a weekly basis, despite having very little idea what's happening and why.

It was a real pleasure to chat briefly to John Smith at the 40th, a lovely chap - I didn't know who he was at first, and then when he told me I said "Wow, I love Indigo Prime, it's totally mental" - his face fell and he said "you do know that I have mental health issues don't you?" - but he was just teasing (I think...  :-\).

You know, I think that mental health is a very peculiar cultural conceit at the present point in time.  On the one hand it is quite acceptable to joke along those lines (e.g. that's my OCD kicking into gear) but on the other hand it really does miss the distress that any condition causes.  Possibly this distress is caused by the negative response that is often generated by admission.

At the same time it is hard to know when this is likely to kick into gear.  The low level discrimination and negative reactions tend to make managers cautious and protective.  Consequently it is hard to know when you are talking with someone who falls into that category.  Given that 20% of the population is supposed to have a mental health issue it is possibly reasonable to assume that any given conversant falls into that category mind.

And now over to the black dog thread ....

Thanks folks, it all makes sense now. I've managed to track down that prog and subsequent progs, hopefully it'll turn out to be a good story!

Do you really reject one of the best/only space operas in 2000 AD? For shame.

If it makes any difference, the Meg floppies are the later Abnett/Williams version of the VCs, not the Finley-Day+MacManus & McMahon/Leach/Kennedy version.

Oh I know. I love that run. But I can understand how it's not for everyone.

I've always found it a bit strange that 2000 AD doesn't do space opera very often. It's why I tend to enjoy more divisive series like Damnation Station or this latest run of Grey Area too.

I really enjoyed it too. Abnett did a great job in continuing a classic series.
